You just made me feel really really really really old.
Feels like yesterday that they put out the silly clip from behind HQ introducing Rob.

I thought this recently also. Good for him.........I remember a MOT video from a show in summer 08 when they're discussing I Disappear and Rob says 'we haven't played that for like 5 years" and a really dickish crew member says "you weren't even in the band 5 years ago!" ... it just seemed really awkward and unnecessary.
Now ludicrously 9 years has passed and he's almost the longest serving bass player. Where the fuck does time go eh?

"you guys will never have a permanent bass player" - bob rock SKOM I haven't watched SKOM in years, but that sounds poorly quoted.

I'm pretty sure the quote is accurate. I remember that scene.
What he should have said was "you'll never have a permanent producer".

It was interesting watching the tuning room stream for the last Copenhagen gig, especially when they were rehersing Ktulu. He knows some of these songs better than the guys who wrote them.

If you are refering to that 360degree clip, I watched it last night and agree with that. Was really great seeing him play Ktulu close up like that, he's all over that stuff, so damn talented.

Do you have a link to that video? The video I'm talking about wasn't 360, it was a livestream from the tuning room just before the gig on the 9th. They were rehearsing Ktulu and everyone but Rob had problems remembering how the song goes. Lars had to check his notes and Kirk had to hear parts of the solo from the record, but Rob seemed to know it by heart.

Sorry, I just checked the links I watched last night and have confused the 2 vids below. They rehearsed FFWF in the 360 vid, not Ktulu metallica.com/videos/32261/tuning-room-360-singapore-2017Still a good view of Rob playing Ktulu in the show footage

maybe not, but it's still a fact.
I, to this day, miss Jason. I am extremely biased, I saw Metallica live twice with Newkid, not once with Rob.

I hope that parts of the US leg Jason makes a special guest appearance for part of the show or the whole show.

Only if they let Rob stand next to him on stage and point out how you're not supposed to play the bass lines like that.

Saw Jason three times, he was awesome live but I never liked his tone. It's funny, I like Jason for the dude he was with the fans but I really dislike everything else about him. He is kinda like Dave Mustaine on bass

To know how right Bob Rock was or wasn't, we'll have to wait until Metallica retires. Rob seems as well integrated as anyone in the band after nearly 14 years, but you never know what's around the corner. Same is true for anyone in the band, really. But it's also true that when you look back on Metallica's career and their lineup since it was consolidated that they never *did* have a permanent bass player. That was the one rotating position in the band, even if two of the tenures lasted over a decade each.
