When I listened to the Rogan interview with James , James talks about getting neck and back surgery at one point.
does anyone know when this happened? First I've heard of it, how long was he out of action?

Was back (heh) in 2000, Kid Rock and a bunch of other awful people fronted Metallica at the shows he missed. It was during the Summer Sanitarium tour.

He crashed his seadoo the day of the show. The show was next to a lake, and everyone was having fun before the concert. Add that injury to his already messed up back from the years of the classic Hetfield stance. I think that's when he started to get dependent on pain killers.

Kid Rock, SOAD and Korn were there with Metallica. I used to own a bootleg from one such show. It was not very good.

I was at the Cleveland, Ohio gig on 1-1-00 w/Kid Rock opening. I was backstage for Meet & Greet during Kid Rock's set and I remember watching his dancers from behind, lol.
