I really don't know why some people talk about production quality like it's some sort of cheat when comparing these two albums.

I think he means that some people might not see the quality of some of the Death magnetic songs because of the bad production. It's a shame if the bad production of a song affects the perception of the song quality (as in the songwriting quality of it).

Not trying to be a dick or anything, but I find it interesting that you chose to say the "perception" of the song quality. I feel that the production can directly affect a songs (or albums) quality, and, in the case of DM, does, and needs to be taken into consideration in that way.

Of course, this is all subjective, as we all define what makes an album or song great in our own way.

But, for me, the production is just as much a part of the song or album as the notes being played (At least when it comes to album versions the songs, which are usually the definitive versions of the track)

I get what you are saying but I don't see it that way at all... Is horsemen a shitty song because the production is arse ? No it's a great song which comes through in a live setting, same with several of the songs of DM.

To be honest, I don't find the production of KEA to be all that terrible. Is the guitar tone thin? Absolutely, but it still sounds (imo) miles ahead of what their thrash contemporaries were doing at the time, and a hell of a lot better than DM.

DM, on the other hand, is the only Metallica album that I actually find difficult to listen to. I think there is somewhat of a tipping point when it comes to production effecting the quality of a song, and DM crosses that line.

St. Anger, imo, does as well (I realize that the production on SA was an artistic choice, rather than an accident, but the point remains the same). If some of those songs had a more standard sounding production, I'm willing to bet that a lot of people would have significantly different opinions on those tracks.
