It's often said that Kurt Cobain and Nirvana were largely responsible for the death of "hair metal". In your opinion, did Cobain, the grunge movement, and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" inspire Metallica to go towards a more radio-friendly (and less metal) direction in the mid 90s? Or do you think this would have likely happened, regardless of whether or not "Nevermind" was ever released?

Guys, it would be cool if we could keep the discussion relevant and on topic.
I remember Lars gave an interview shortly after Kurt's death that was very complimentary to Kurt and Nirvana's impact. Sometimes I think if the grunge movement wouldn't have happened, Metallica may not have went the "Load" route. Anyone else feel similar?

Have you never changed your style? In anything? Almost everybody does it.

You have to admit the style difference with "Loads" was pretty drastic, though. I can still remember when those albums were new, and I recall many fans being unhappy with the band's change of style. I still think Kurt's influence may have been what pushed Metallica to take try that style. Kurt had a huge impact on the entire scene. There was no one more revered around that time.

This feels like a bumped thread from 20 years ago. Who still ponders this shit? Hey, let's ask notinthislifetime and roommate Jason what they think.

Kurt Cobain was the last person to dress like a pimp and wear eye makeup. Cobain may not have invented it, but he is largely credited for reshaping the scene. He was the spokesperson of the so-called Generation-X. Nirvana forced many bands to re-think their image and style of playing, and I don't think Metallica was exempt. In some ways, I think the "Load" albums were Metallica's response to "Nevermind".

It's not as if there is much conversation around here, otherwise, plus it incites discussion (which is the purpose of a forum, right?). Other than several members saying what they liked about DM, and other fans responding with comments like, "Yeah. I think that's cool too", what else would we be talking about? We already know that Metallica and their late night tv appearances is off-limits.

All i know is after they cut their hair, they were the never the same band again. That's probably a fair statement. May I ask if you think they got better after cutting their hair?
