Hey, guys. Big, old-school Metallica fan here. I'd think it would be fair to say that a large part of Metallica's 'sound' has always been their guitar playing. We got some really amazing solos from Kirk on the first 5-6 albums. Since that time, I've found his playing to be slightly below par, and there have definitely been opportunities for improvement, imo.
Other bands have brought in an additional guitarist, whether it be for studio or on tour, to strengthen the overall sound of the band. For those that agree that Kirk's playing hasn't been quite as inspired in recent decades, do you think adding an additional guitarist might be a viable option, in terms of reigniting the spark, for Metallica?

They'll never do it. They are comfortable and fine with who they have. Like they've said numerous times, they have nothing to prove anymore and they are playing music because they enjoy it. They are all in their early 50s, having an additional guitarist in the mix would really make no sense under the current circumstances. Justifying an additional guitarist merely on the fact that Kirk isn't able to play Ride the Lightning style solo's like he was 22 years old again is a bit silly. I don't think he is uninspired. The solo's on Hardwired...To Self-Destruct sound perfectly fine to me and not at all crap. I know people say that because it sounds repetitive, but to my ears they really don't. They fit the songs fairly well.

What if they had 2 extra drummers, a keyboardist, a DJ, and masks!

Let me guess, your favourite band is Guns N' Roses? Yawn.

I wouldn't mind seeing a Third guitarist in there at a one off gig, like the 30th anniversary. Only to hear some guitars backing up the guitar harmony stuff. I hate that the harmony parts are sometimes the best part, yet live they sound empty and hollow.

I'd rather them play to a click like Meshuggah and Devin Townsend do. Keep that shit tight, sync the lights with it.

I'm not sure if I completely understand the "NOTINTHISLIFETIME" reference, but yes, it just so happens that I do like Axl and Slash. Thank you for the avatar selection. To the person or persons that mentioned adding a keyboardist to the band, I would tend to agree that might be an interesting addition. Other bands have done it and been successful. In fact, I think GNR was one of those bands. The point being, I think Metallica would benefit from adding some additional layers to their music to help enhance their sound both in studio and while on tour, since Kirk's playing isn't what it once was. I think Zakk Wylde could make an interesting addition to the band. Or maybe even Buckethead ..

They should absolutely consider bringing DJ Ashba on board. Man, I saw Axl and friends 'bout 6 years ago, and all I could think about when I saw Ashba was that he was trying to be some cornball goth version of Slash.

This is fucking glorious The funny thing is that both "Jason" and "the general" both have that never before seen - quoting and addressing by name when replying to posts. Must be cause they live together and so their forum etiquette has synced like their periods...
