James Hetfield: Cliff Burton Would Have Shown ‘Resistance’ to Metallica’s 1990s Albums
In recent years, James Hetfield has been brutally honest about the more maligned Metallica efforts as well as their failed ventures like the Into the Never film. In a new interview with Team Rock, he reflected on his personal bond with “ally” Cliff Burton and how the late bassist would have perceived their work following his death. He also offered some critical thoughts on everything from 1991’s ‘The Black Album’ through 2003’s St. Anger, going as far as calling the Load and Reload era the “U2 version of Metallica.” When asked what Burton would have thought of Metallica’s output from 1991 through 2003, Hetfield revealed, “Well, I certainly would have thought there would have been some resistance, for sure.” Grateful for what they accomplished with producer Bob Rock on their eponymous record, he returned to the notion of Burton, adding, “I think Cliff would have probably interjected some different stuff, getting his bass heard and some more musically challenging things, probably.” Turning his attention to Burton and the mid-’90s, Hetfield underscored his discontent with this period, stating, “I would certainly think that the Load and Reload [era], I would have had an ally that was very against it all – the reinvention or the U2 version of Metallica.” When asked if he was comfortable with this point of Metallica’s career, the frontman responded, “No, no, not at all.” “There’s some great, great songs on there,” Hetfield admitted, continuing, “But my opinion is that all of the imagery and stuff like that was not necessary. And the amount of songs that were written was… it diluted the potency of the poison of Metallica. And I think Cliff would have agreed with that.” Full interview| loudwire.com/james-hetfield-cliff-burton-would-have-shown-resistance-to-metallicas-1990s-albums/?trackback=tsmclip

Can't argue with that. Thems were the 90's the decade of strange choices.

I can't argue the Load albums being the "U2 version of Met" either. And I agree and can understand why Cliff likely wouldn't have been onboard with it.

Cocaine is a hell of a drug. Yeah using the same photographer Anton Corbi-trouser-press or whatever he was called, didn't give a very suitable inlay to the album.
But, all said, as we look back, it's a nice couple of mellow albums to listen to on an early commute to work.

I can see Cliff enjoying a good amount of the 90s music, Bleeding Me, Hero of the day, Where the Wild things Are, Until it Sleeps etc. Because Cliff liked good music and was into mellow stuff.
And who knows, as far as the image stuff goes. Maybe cliff was into feather boa's as well.

I liked the Load look. I thought they looked super cool. Me too. Of course, I got into Metallica during the Load era, after seeing Until it Sleeps and King Nothing on MTV. For some time, Metallica WAS that glam-goth-mascara-fashion thing to me. And I'm fine with that era. In hindsight, it's obvious that James wasn't that into it, the style was mostly Lars and Kirk. But people go through different styles in their life, there's nothing wrong with that.

I remember thinking Met's 90s "look" was that of a bunch of sell-outs and posers. I guess you can say that was the decade that they went all Hollywood.

I would think Metallica as a whole in 1986 didn't know what they would be doing or liking or looking like in the 90s.

To say what someone would like 10 years in the future us daft.
10 years ago I played an ESP KH2, today I play a neon pink Ibanez...

Fandom aside, I don't think the majority would deny that Met 'sold out' right around the release of Load. At that point, it was important to them that they had hollywood haircuts and radio friendly music that was available to the mainstream. I'm not saying that they are the only band to ever sell out, but they sure as hell DID "sell out", regardless of whether you like that terminology or not. Based on James own comments, he doesn't even seem thrilled about that era of Met.

Glad I don't give a shit about what a band looks like, all I care about is if the music is good.
