Savage is a greasy motherfucker. Maybe my favorite from disk 2 (other than Spit, obviously).
The main riff is ridiculously fat and groovy. The verse riff is a sludgy behemoth. The prechorus section is totally unique and almost hits me as a little progy. The ascending riff during the chorus fits the tone of the song perfectly, the solo is one of the best on the album, and the Sawblade riff still feels like I'm being sodomized by an oil tanker in the best possible way.

Haha love this post <3 I was at a Christmas launch Saturday, the dude has a pretty great stereo system with big ass speakers. Suddenly Dead came on, the volume was calm but wow it sounded heavy, dat bass... Anyways, later when people were drunk I cranked up Savage, holy mother of god, the song suddenly came even more to life. When the Sawblade riff came in I came the volume a little ekstra juice, the look on peoples face It sounded fucking amazing, I especially love the last I'M I SAVAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE. So heavy.

Whatever time signature it's in, ManUNkind shouldn't made the album. Even Am I Savage is stretching it.

Hm, how many more waltzes do Metallica have? I can only think of Low man's lyric right now.

NEM is 3/4 and Tuesdays Gone. Does 6/8 count? Because the middle section of Orion is probably the most waltz-y thing they've done.

Cool interview, although I think they're being a little hard on DM. While I certainly don't think it's as good at HTSD, I believe it does have a higher score on metacritic (Although I do think a lot of those early reviews for DM were overly positive due to the excitement over the fact that Metallica were actually doing something more akin to their older stuff). Still...

One of the things I've noticed lately is when James and Lars have been interviewed about the album they seem really stunned about everyone saying it's so good. I'm not saying they don't like the album, but it almost feels like they thought it was only "okay" at the time of release. In one interview Lars was talking about how surprised he was that the album was actually good when he heard it in the car with his wife. James keeps repeating that it blows him away that people like the record so much.
I'm not sure if it's modesty or maybe they weren't so high on the album at first and it's starting to hit them that it's actually pretty damn consistent and well made. This whole tour cycle has had a weird feeling around it, I'm not sure if it's because of all the Kirk talk but it all seems kind of tame compared to how the boys usually handle things. Maybe yepsure is right about something going on. Or I'm probably just over thinking things again. I can't be the only one that is feeling a weird vibe about everything right now am I? It just feels so different and subdued compared to the DM release. Even the stage show just seems kind of like "ehhh whatever, good enough".
Damn you Metallica!

This whole tour cycle has had a weird feeling around it One of the reasons is that there is no fucking hype whatsoever. It's all disappeared since early December. They played a couple of stadiums in Asia. Yeah cool, they play a few outdoor gigs every year. The videos on Metallica.com have all but stopped. Yeah we got Halo and Dead quickly, but there's no cool meet and greet stuff, no backstage stuff. The making of videos haven't all been posted, and we've had sweet fuck all about the other shows. It doesn't feel like the WorldWired tour has kicked off, it feels like they're all still on Christmas break, and oh yeah they played a couple of shows. Compare it to say DM and even St. Anger, there was a continuous momentum of energy from Mission Metallica/JITS to the album release, first Fillmore gigs, and festival shows in Europe, or the DM area shows in the O2 arenas and it didn't stop until the first break in the tour. This time around it was album release, press tour, club show. Nothing for a few weeks then more press, another club show. Nothing for weeks. Christmas. A show or two in Asia with barely any coverage or content. Everyone talking about Kirk's erratic behaviour, not a new album tour kicking off. They let the positive energy/momentum die and haven't re-ignited it.

They let the positive energy/momentum die and haven't re-ignited it. You summed it up way better than I did. It feels like they released the album and disappeared off the face of the Earth, only to pop up here and there to do a show. I noticed it when I looked at this: That's CRAZY to me. Especially considering how "old" the Ghost song is. Something just seems off about the whole thing. The tour videos suck, the making ofs have gone awol. I feel like them blowing their load all at once and releasing the videos in one day might have been a mistake. Maybe scattering them out a bit would have held the hype up somewhere in between these long periods of nothing. I'm not even really excited about seeing them live now that it's all but confirmed that it will be a stadium tour. Hell they don't even look excited these last few shows to be playing. They are just going through the motions. The new songs sound bland live, almost lifeless which SUCKS because they are so damn good on the record.

Really ? Is think all the new songs sound amazing live. Especially the vocals They sound good, but lifeless. If that makes sense. Hopefully as the tour goes on and they become familiar with all of the songs they will settle in nicely. I do agree about the vocals, and he has been very consistent. Lars, Rob, and James are really about as good as they can be right now. Kirk is just off in lala land. The performance of Halo from Singapore made me cringe so damn hard because he went into the second verse still playing his little solo. He comes in early in half the songs and late in the others. It's fucking sad because the rest of the band has been consistently improving. The bad thing about improvising his solos on the record is that he can't fucking play them live because he doesn't remember them and it's painfully obvious. The band just pisses me off because it always seems like there is one person who isn't on their game. I just want them to all be consistently good. On the DM tour it was Lars, and he has VASTLY improved. It just makes me mad because Hardwired is the first record of theirs that really has captured me in a long time and I know Kirk can do better. "Hey guys this album really is a return to form for us and sounds fucking great. Fuck it, I'm gonna improvise my solos." Sometimes I feel like the band is trolling us. They always have to do some weird off the wall shit that doesn't work. /endrant
