They release metal records, everyone is happy, they release a different kind of metal album and people goes bonkers. Then they release a few hard rock albums and people turn their backs on them. They experiment with some garage thing and everyone hates that too. Then they try some obscure stuff with an old dude, every goes completely mental and screams after som proper old metal. After years and years they return to their roots and releases two old style metal albums... People: They are boring and freeze dried. Just plays the same old metal. Not moving forward, no experiments. Booooh. It must not be easy. I enjoyed Load/Reload when they were released even St. Anger was a fun record to listen to, obviously they're not up to the standard of MOP/TBA but still. I think they've got back on track with DM and HW though.

I actually don't have a impression that HTSD is a attempt to getting back into those thrash roots once again just like they did during DM. HTSD for me is very organic album that represents 'in the moment' attitude without overthinking it too much. And i would even say that apart from opener and closer these songs sound like a metal covers of some unknown, obscure classic rock songs from the 70's.

After 2 years since the realease of HTSD here's my rank of Metallica albums:
...And Justice for All Master of Puppets The Black Album Ride the Lightning Load Hardwired... to Self-Destruct St. Anger ReLoad Kill 'em All Death Magnetic
So it was their best album in 20 years I would say. The top 4 are on completely another level however.

And i would even say that apart from opener and closer these songs sound like a metal covers of some unknown, obscure classic rock songs from the 70's. My feelings exactly. To me, Death Magnetic feels forced, like they're actively trying to please the old-school fans demanding a "return to their roots" thrash album. And that's exactly why it fails - it doesn't feel organic or authentic. It's like they were actively thinking "is this what the fans want" more than just letting things happen naturally. And I'm sure they had a lot of pressure leading up to DM, so maybe they felt like they needed to play it safe and do it that way.
Hardwired... To Self-Destruct, on the other hand, feels completely different. While some of the problems with song structures and arrangements that plagued DM still linger on, overall the album seems a lot more coherent, organic and genuine. They're also much more willing to experiment and go outside the box. While there's certainly a degree of old-style thrashiness to some of the songs, there's also some of the bluesy vibe of the Load era, among other things. It just feels like they needed to do DM like they did for HWTSD to be able to happen. They got the "forced old-schoolness" out, and afterwards were able to be genuine and original again.
Two years in, my rankings for Metallica albums is as follows:
1. HWTSD 2. Justice 3. Black 4. Ride 5. Reload 6. Load 7. Puppets 8. KEA 9. St. Anger 10. DM
As before, the Top 3 and Bottom 2 are pretty much set in stone, but #4-8 are pretty much tied and could be put in any order depending on the day.

Agreed. Hardwired would definitely be the best album (imo) if they'd exercised some quality control, whereas now it's probably their best.

I prefer DM's thrashy feel to the mid tempo stuff on HWTSD, if anything it reminds me of Load.

HW was obviously an attempt to generally write catchier, more to the point songs. I'd hardly call that organic or in the moment.
I recently went back and listened to DM for the first time in some years (itunes version so it was more listenable) and, it was pretty damn good. I think most of it is better than HW, only a few tracks on HW give DM a run for it's money. But DM is a better album overall. HW ends up with songs at certain points that don't really fit or add anything to the album.

He's right this time, though. I absolutely love both Load and Reload, but HWTSD is so much better.

Hardwired is okay. DM is okay too. I think HTSD has higher highs but also lower lows. DM has lesser variance but even its best isn't quite as high as HTSD's.

DM is shite. Hardwired pisses all over it. But the title track and lemmy tribute are crap.

I don't hate the first three songs, Judas Kiss or My Apocalypse, but I rarely get the feeling that I need to hear them. But yeah, the clipping is quite unbearable. Far more distracting and annoying than the drum sound on St. Anger.

That's the before picture. She should do the after picture with the Load record.
