Damn, I forgot Bowie's Blackstar was released this year. That was easily the best album of the year.

Off the top of my head:
Avantasia - Ghostlights Zakk Wylde - Book of Shadows II Epica - The Holographic Principle Deftones - Gore Delain - Moonbathers Sinbreed - Master Creator Aaron Lewis - Sinner
Still a few more to come out that could be great.

In no particular order:
Avenged Sevenfold - The Stage Alter Bridge - The Last Hero Twelve Foot Ninja - Outlier Haken - Affinity Black Crown Initiate - Selves We Cannot Forgive Obscura - Akroasis Fleshgod Apocalypse - King Megadeth - Dystopia Testament - Brotherhood of the Snake Killswitch Engage
I know I'm forgetting some stuff, but this is some of the records I've enjoyed most this year. A7X is my biggest contender for AoTY at this point.

Just thought of a few more:
Tremonti - Dust Katatonia - The Fall of Hearts Meshiaak - Alliance if Theives Witherscape - The Northern Sanctuary Death Angel - The Evil Divide Be'Lakor - Vessels Devin Townsend - Transcendence Insomnium - Winter's Gate (Also an AoTY contender, dunno how I forgot it) Allegeon - Proponent for Sentience Opeth - Sorceress
This year had been incredibly good for new releases. I think I've obtained, in one way or another, around 90 new albums this year and there have been very few that O didn't care for.

Listened to BLACKSTAR last weekend after a big rest and yes, has to be right up there as Best Release for 2016.
Still gelling with the Sorceress album. Has not grabbed me the same way the last 2 Opeth albums did.
Anthrax - For All Kings is a great album from them. Haven't really put it away since I bought it.
Jake Bugg - On My One. Saw him live this year too, amazing talent.

Top 5:
Insomnium - Winter's Gate (already AoTY for me, no contest really) Astronoid - Air Be'lakor - Vessels Oddland - Origin Embreach - The World that We Have Lost
Dark Tranquillity's new album is pretty good as well, solid year for melodeath. Transcendence likewise. I also recommend checking out that Astronoid record if you want a bit of a metal curveball.

Meshuggah - The Violent Sleep Of Reason Devin Townsend Project - Transendence The Jezabels - Synthia Frank Ocean - Blond Gojira - Magma King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Nonagon Infinity Massive Attak - Ritual Spirit (EP)
Skeleton Tree and Blackstar still need more listens to fully sink in, they're pretty dense and I have to be in the right mood so I haven't listened to them much, same with Radiohead's new one. Sorceress I haven't really listened to it in full, the couple songs I listened didn't do anything for me though, which is weird since I'm a fan of their last 2 albums. Need to check out Chelsea Wolfe and Russian Circles though, they'll most likely make my list.
Edit: Oh shit, forgot Vektor, fkin monster album for sure.

You really should. It has the same " thing" with Hardwired. The more you listen to it, the better it gets. There are a few song where it's superior to "The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here". DuVall had much more freedom here and stepped as the lead vocalist nicely. Where as in AIC it sort of feels like a harmonic battle between him & Cantrell. Not that their harmonized vocals aren't fucking great but he doesn't have a leading role on vocals like in this one. Anyway, it's a really solid hard rock effort.
