Would you say that in-the-round stages or end stages are better from the POV of a fan and as a band? Do you like attending a concert with one stage over the other, and if you were in a giant band which stage would you rather play on? What would you say are the pros/cons of each from a fan and performer standpoint, i.e., is the sound better on an end stage since it's all coming from one direction? And are end stages better for the fans since the performer and fans are always facing each other?
I've always assumed that in-round-stages might be a more impressive spectacle, but the sound and audience view is better on an end stage.

End stage by far.
I have seen so many concerts both in the round and end stage and its not comparable. Better sound (by a country mile), better visuals and fans facing in a similar direction

I like the end stage and that's mainly because they used to do that back in the day....and for some reason back in the day always = best for me. If they played on pogo sticks in 1986 that's what I'd prefer. I want them to get those steps leading up to Lars' drums again. Plus they haven't had many end stage gigs indoors since 2000 so it feels fresher.
I saw them in the round for the DM run and it was great though.....was cool seeing Lars' footwork (or lack of it) and all the differing angles of the band.

End stage, the simpler the better. I'm there to watch and listen to a band play their music, I dont need all these fancy screens, lasers, tesla coils or giant toilets.

It's not theatre, end stage is more than enough. And depending on the venue you can get that intimacy feeling just the same.

I haven't been to any in-the-round shows so my pick will have to be end stage.

End stage, the sound is way better.

Is there much of a difference in seating capacity between the two stages?

Sound wise, end stage for sure. But I gotta say, once you've attended a show in the round front row, it's hard to want anything else. You can basically touch their feet, it's so intimate and cool. I don't care for lasers and all that crap either, but having Hetfield kneeling down riffing 1 meter away from you ? Giving you a fist bump ? Amazing.
I've been very fortune with my placing through most of my Metallica shows, and after I was front row for 5 shows in a row in 2009, everything else since have felt... Not nearly as cool, except being in the snake pit in 2012. I saw them in Germany with the big four, we were placed outside the pit (first time and last time I've tried that) probably closer to the middle than the stage. I don't like that at all, I'm probably spoiled, but I couldn't care less for a show like that.

Having been to both an in the round and end of arena show from Metallica I have to say the sound is no different. They have baffling and deadeners in place no matter what the stage setup. It's just a case of moving them.
And I'll always go for in the round over end stage. You get four front rows, much better sight lines plus every one is equal. Plus it makes their show more dynamic as they move around much more as opposed to just shifting from microphone 1 stage left to microphone 4 stage right.

I totally agree, but the sound really depends on a lot of things, especially the venue, and I'm sure it's a bitch being Mick at those shows. When they did the DM tour in the round in Copenhagen, at first the sound was horrible when you were front row, the speakers hanging from the ceiling couldn't reach down so you basically heard the sound after it echoed from the walls. They fixed that with speakers almost under the stage so those at front row got some good sound too. It was quite awesome the last few shows when they got it all tweaked out

Yeah I saw some interviews with him where he says it's a challege. He's very good at his job though so he probably figures it out usually.

I've only done sound a couple of times at our own gigs years ago, very small places, even that I found pretty damn difficult

I haven't listened to it yet. Then don't, it's horrible I thought it was decent. Not as good as Moth, but certainly not one of the harbingers of the apocalypse as some would say it is... You.

Great interview that will help shed some light to this discussion. I like both setups, as long as I can see well and there isn't any drunk assholes next to me.

So would Metallica be able to fit more or less people in the venue if it was an end stage?

A few thousand less if it was at the end. Setting up the stage at the end would block off all the seats at the bottom of the picture. Having the in the round setup makes all those seats accessible rather then it being the traditional back stage area filled with gear, cables and stuff like that.

End stage general admission size wouldn't make up for it?

End stage general admission size wouldn't make up for it? Can't say for sure but I doubt it. You can still fit a lot of people on the floor with a center stage.

I'm an end stage preference guy, not a fan of the World Magnetic/it takes up the entire arena floor stage-set-up where Hetfield ends up walking around and using 6 different stage mics per show.

Poor Touring Me tour was twice that.
I liked the rotating stage, it turned so gradually that you didn't even notice, then all of a sudden Lars was facing you.
