Just under 40 minutes until the Champions League final kicks off. Going for a 2-1 Atletico win, hopefully Torres getting the winner.

Anybody following Copa América? The matches have been pretty shit so far, barring the Mexico vs Uruguay game. The result would've been a whole lot different had Suarez played I'm sure, but I think we stood our ground pretty well and took great advantage of the goal situations we had during the game.

Totti has signed a new one year contract with Roma, apparently going to retire at the end of next season. A one club man since his debut in the 92/93 season. Just a shame he never won more in his career.

Totti of course is/was a great player, but he is also a swine on the pitch and have proved so on serveral occasions. While I certainly appreciate a one club man, he was never really my cup of tea

Uruguay is out of the tournament quite poor sportsmanship from the Uruguayan Federation president to claim that the tourney is rigged for Mexico because of the crowd support. I guess that all the other times Mexico went and played in South American pitches it was rigged against us, no wonder we never won anything.

So, we got buttfucked by Chile yesterday, I'm quite glad I was at a party and I didn't get a chance to watch that massacre.

So I've decided I want to start following the EPL this year (the year my payTV company loses the rights of course) and I need to pick a team.
I'm very ignorant of the competition, but know enough to not want to pick a bandwagon team like Arsenal, ManU, Chelsea, or Liverpool.
Help me decide Brits.

Offensive/tactical I guess...? For the EPL, I'm thinking I'll follow Chelsea. I realise it's a bit of a bandwagon choice, but here are my reasons: a) Years ago, I would go to a mates house every week, and he was a big Chelsea fan, he'd always have games on. b) When I stayed in London last year, I stayed around the corner from Chelsea FC, and really liked the neighbourhood. c) I have access to a dedicated Chelsea FC channel this year, so I'll be able to watch all their EPL games. It turns out, I'll also get to watch the following leagues: Spanish La Liga, Italian Serie A, German Bundesliga and Brazilian Serie A. And of course, the Aussie A-League :)

Don't support Chelsea. They're scum. Any club who has a piece of shit like John Terry as the face is garbage.

Chelsea is probably the worst yes, alongside Shitty. Generally clubs which have oil milliarders supporting them are shit

You should just pick at random out of a hat, removing any teams you want to avoid beforehand (eg 'bandwagon' teams).

I would say Tottenham and Arsenal were the most enjoyable to watch last season.

Chelsea it is. Partially because a couple of you hate them! But seriously, they're a starting point. I know I'll get to watch their games in Aus, due to the dedicated channel, but if I find that I don't like their play style I'm sure I'll find myself moving away and towards another team. It's weird deciding to get into a new sporting code as an adult and selecting what team to follow. It feels unnatural and somehow inauthentic. Normally you grow up following a sport and usually the same team your parents follow (or you form your own opinion on a team at a young age).

You can still do the same thing, just follow random teams and watch different matches, decide for yourself what you like

Kimbo, as a mod are you able to change the topic title? If it could be updated to something like Football (soccer) thread (season 2016/2017) to reflect the upcoming season that'd be ideal. Not sure if it's better to do that rather than start a new topic.

Nice one Kimbo. Now I have a suitable place to air my grievances:
Our opening game is Arsenal away! For fuck's sake. Then the next two aways are Spurs and Chelsea. Nice to get difficult fixtures out of the way I suppose. Our last eight or so games don't look too bad (relatively speaking), so hopefully there'll be a strong end to the season. Obviously that's way, way into the future though.

First seven away games were Stoke, Arsenal, Man Utd, Everton, Tottenham, Chelsea, Man City.

So Messi retires from international football at 29, following Argentina's defeat to Chile in the Copa America final on penalties. Thought he'd do it after the next World Cup but seems four defeats in nine years in major finals has left him a bit demoralised.
