He was 83. His career was basically over and he lived a good, long life and brought joy to many people in the meantime. Nothing to be sad about.

I do give a shit about friends and family and acquaintances that have passed in my life time and also for other non-celebs brought to my attention via news articles (more so cruelty and death to children) I have a soft heart.

Hey Grumpy Gus(es), it's ok to feel despondent about the passing of someone who brought you happiness in your life - whether you knew them personally or not.
RIP.

This isn't the first time I've seen someone point out the genius observation that more people tend to care about celebrity deaths than regular people dying, and trying to spin that to make themselves sound superior. Just because people didn't know a celebrity personally doesn't mean they can't care about them. It's fine to just say that you didn't really care much about them as long as you do so respectfully*, but essentially scolding people for caring about something is just indicative of a crummy attitude and quite a bit of projection. Don't act like there aren't any celebrities who you would give a shit about if they died.
*I still stand by this after the whole shitstorm over SoulCrusher saying he didn't care much about Lemmy.

Seriously though I greatly enjoyed quite a bit of Gene Wilder's work over the years, particularly in Willy Wonka. Like I said, he lived a good, long life.

I don't think you can lump Gene Wilder in with the Kardashions (?) and Joey Essex. When Did I ? My point is people die every day yet we only rect strongly if they're "famous". There was huge outpourings of support and sadness over the recent tragedies in Paris, Orlando etc. You'd have a point if you were saying that we don't react as strongly to bombings and tragedies in the middle east as those in the west, but they're also much more common and we can't as a species be in constant sorrow. There's enough death to be sad and in mourning every day if you want to let that thought process overwhelm you. Choosing to care more about those that mean something to you is only natural. Sorry we're not sad about the right things grief police.

"celeb" Joey Essix is a "celeb" Gene Wilder was a ledge. People only react strongly when they have had interaction with someone that has past. Whether that interaction be two way, or one way, like via entertainment, that still trumps the millions of unknowns that have died as far as the beholder is concerned. People are not meant to grieve for countless millions of faceless people they never knew. If we did we would all be in a permanent state of mourning.

I should get around to watching his Willy Wonka movie some time, but then I'd lose the pleasure of seeing the look on people's faces when I say that.

Its OK, I have never seen it either. Can't say I've seen much of his stuff if any at all, I am aware of his work though.

I love the original Willy Wonka. The Tim Burton Johnny Depp one was awful as expected.
