I bought a bunch of vinyls the other week.
Been playing a lot of early Fleetwood Mac recently and found a nice copy of a Best of, with Oh Well 1&2, Green Manalishi, Need your Love, etc... this is getting lots of listens.
Some of the other albums... Elton John - selftitled Rainbow - best of Plastic Ono band - Shaved fish Tour of Duty s/t Hendrix - Soundtrack recordings
Wife's getting a bit fed up with the volume I think

New Alestorm storm album "Seventh Rum of the Seventh Rum" is fantastic. Lots of goodies on this. But the real gold is the bonus disc of all the songs in acoustic format with epic flute solos and all that.

KISS - Unmasked. Many fans were done by the time this album came out but theres lots of good songs on here like Tomorrow and Is That You? Also one of my favourite quirky Ace songs, Torpedo Girl.
Rainbow - Rising. Always come back to this classic because it kicks major arse. Stargazer is such a great song.
NoMan - Schoolyard Ghosts. Bit chilled compared to the albums before it but has some beatiful songs and piano.
Jet - Get Born. Aussie band that I never really had much time for. I bought this because it had a bonus live disc and Aussie bands turn it up a few notches when they play live. Lots of radio hits on here, was surprised how much of this album I knew.
Jake Bugg - Saturday night, Sunday morning. I love all his albums but the last 2 took a while to click with me. This one opens up with a track that is already being used for a telecoms business which surprises me that he allowed that. Young dude still but has quite the catalogue behind him already and can write some great tunes. Cant wait to hear whats next from him

Gentle Giant - Octopus / The Power and the Glory / Free Hand
All great albums. I love me some Gentle Giant time to time.
Meshuggah - The Violent Sleep of Reason / Immutable
Well, both are good to great to one dimensional, if this makes any sense...
Shadow Gallery - Tyranny
One of the greats of modern prog metal. Not like the current prog metal scene such as Polyphia, Tesseract e.t.c. Traditional heavy metal influenced Dream Theater-esque prog metal I am talking about. Less heavy than Dream Theater but perhaps more melodic & more theatrical. Arguably better vocals in Mike Baker than James LaBrie. I like DT more, though. Shadow Gallery are a great band but they don't have the "wow" effect on me. Never had.

Opeth - Ghost Reveries, and ICV, the last one (english version) over and over in the car.
Banaman grooves like Take Five, Dave Brubek

Spock's Beard - Brief Nocturnes and Dreamless Sleep
Lovely album. There are some fun and interesting stuff on this album. Afterhoughts is a sweet song. Great keyboard work, of course but vocalist Ted Leonard did a good job too.

Saints'n Sinners - Rise of the Alchemist
Classical heavy metal. Good vocals, good solos, nice melodies. A very good effort overall. Nothing new, yes and this was way over done by many good bands but sometimes this type of metal is what you need.

Jeff Beck Group - Truth Strong debut. You Shook Me rivalling Led Zepps effort released round the same time (jeff not happy bout that). Let Me Love You is a standout. Also has the classic Becks Bolero possibly featuring Jimmy Page

I listened to it for the first time at the very right moment. It hit me directly. Loved it. It is a very good release even after the first listen.

Now that we are approaching to the new album release, I decided to listen to the back catalog.
Hardwired to Self Destruct
To me, this album has an insane replay value and that comes from diversity. It offers pretty much everything. Initially I liked it but wasn't sure how strong it is. I find this album near perfect in this stage of their career. It has epicness, it has beauty, it has weirdness, it has heaviness and it has a lot of melodies making you go back and listen to again and again.
I stopped listening to it for a long time and then when I came back, I loved it again. This shows that an album is strong.
My favourite songs are; Spit Out the Bone, Halo on Fire, Dream No More, Manunkind and Hardwired but I like them all.

I gave up on it quite early, I admit. I remember skipping the entire second disc except Spit out the Bone.

First disc + Spit is way better than I expected from the band at that time, and I believe it has multiple songs with better staying power than anything on DM.

I think Hardwired as an album has higher highs than DM, but DM is more consistent across the board. I genuinely think DM with better production would have been a top tier Metallica album for many. Even simple things such as vocal harmonies would have gone a long way.
My main issue with Hardwired is actually that I feel it *lacks* diversity. I would have liked a full-on ballad, and even an instrumental would have been nice. When you get to disc 2 the songs start to sound samey. Heavy mid-tempo riffs that don't seem very inspired. Having said that, the album has five songs that I think are among Metallica's best of the best, and that's impressive on its own.

It also needs a bit of an editing. Some of the songs drag too long. Those songs could have been way better with some clever editing. Interesting that you think it lacks diversity. Compared to Death Magnetic, I find diversity as its strong suit. But I do agree that some songs could have been better. Especially disc 2. I see your point, though. Am I Savage, Now that We're Dead, Murder One(I like this one a lot though), Confusion, Here Comes Revenge are a bit weaker than disc 1, agreed. There is imbalance but perhaps this imbalance between disc 1 and disc 2 comes from the song order and most songs being mid tempo. None of these songs are bad or far cry from average Metallica. Any of them could have been on the Black Album, Load/Reload or Death Magnetic and fit in very well.

I remember skipping the entire second disc except Spit out the Bone. sometimes, some albums may be terrible on first listen but when you give a chance on the right moment, you find them very enjoyable. Maybe the right moment hasn't come yet with this album. It took me ages to enjoy Opeth and now I find them as one of the best things that happened to music. Not just metal.

Megadeth - The Sick, The Dying, and the Dead
Well, where to start. I did listen to this many times when it was released. I just wanted to see its replay strenth.
First two songs are pretty good. The title song is interesting, one of the most different Megadeth songs ever. Half of the album is very good. Celubutante was a nice surprise. Very 80s. Cool song. But the other half of the album (and also half of the some of the songs) feel dry. It doesn't offer much interesting stuff but just keeps going on and on.
Still there are some interesting stuff.
For example, Life in Mars almost starts like an Ayreon song!

Went vinyl shopping yesterday and found a couple of goodies.
Last nights listening was
INXS - Kick Still sounds very fresh, kick ass opener Guns in the Sky had me hooked like it was 87 again. Lots of hits on here. Shame one of them was ruined by local footy time using it every home game.
Bon Jovi - s/t Fairly strong debut. I remember hearing Runaway before I even knew who the band was and thought it was great. Took a few years for everyone to catchup and then the band exploded. These days, not so good.
Jake Bugg - Shangrila Rick Rubin quickly getting in on this young talent, producing this 2nd album. Bit of country touch on a song or 2. Each of his albums are unique and I find the last couple are growers.
Karma to Burn - Wild wonderful Purgatory Instrumental stoner metal. Guitars sound great on this one. Worried about not getting to work on time? Put this on

Wheel - Moving Backwards
I may be a bit late to the party but how did I miss this band before? What a great, modern heavy band. For fans of Tool, A Perfect Circle, Karnivool, Soen e.t.c. but with enough originality. Highly recommended.

Star One - Revel in Time
Alright, I am a BIG FAN. This one is a strong album. It has a lot of things and a lot of references. It even features a song about my favourite movie of all time (Back to the Future). I did like it a lot but somehow it doesn't grasp my attention as much as I thought it would. By the way Arjen Lucassen started to tease for his next project which will be titled Supersonic Revolution and he will be playing bass for this one. This is a very personal dissatisfaction but I don't like the cover art because it looks like too much of an Ayreon album. Because it is designed by the same artist called Jef Berthels who makes the Ayreon artwork. See here: www.jefbertels.com/Porcupine Tree - Closure/Continuation
As far as I can tell, this kinda divided the fans. But not between those who liked it and those who didn't. It divided the fans as "those who loved it" vs. those said "this is good but not as good as compared to PT's previous efforts". Both sides agreed on one thing, though. Chimeria's Wreck is an absolute masterpiece. What a song! I liked the album. It is good. At least feels good enough following Wilson's take on synth pop/prog. I had mixed feelings about his previous solo album. Some people even considered this as the best album for 2022. One thing is certain. It has stellar production.

So been playing a variety of things this past week. Heres a few things I sat down with
IRON MAIDEN - SOMEWHERE IN TIME Its a great album and somewhere in time I forgot this was the case. Stranger in a Strange Land got a few repeat listens. Funny what happens when you revisit something from way back, I never used to like that one so much
KISS - ANIMALISE Another blast from the past. Wow, this thing felt like it was over in 20 minutes. Nothing amazing here, Thrills in the Night sounds pretty average compared to my memory of it. I do like Get All you can Take but yeah back on the shelf, Maiden stayed out.
JOE SATRIANI- PROF SATCHAFUNKILUS Picked this up secondhand the other day and really enjoyed it. Might be time to look at a few more of his albums, I only really dedicated time to Surfing and Blue Dream albums.
