everything but the girl - worldwide
re-listening to a lot of records for exciting academic work i know will be made boring, the journey there is grand though. a beautiful "city pop" esque record from one of the big 4 bands from hull. geography, space and memory are all intertwined beautifully here (that's why i'm listening to it), in a very gorgeous way: evocative at times of bands as similar yet far apart as the beautiful south, cocteau twins and secret machines. i don't know if it's my favourite record of theirs but it really hit a sweet spot this evening

Ayreon - Transitus
It's good but not as powerful as your regular Ayreon albums yet. I need more time. However, the Transitus show will probably be amazing.

slash's snakepit - it's 5 o'clock somewhere (ok, i'm late, it's an 1995 album). Not bad but it needs a different singer. Now it's just an ok album.
nastasee - trim the fat. Some old school hard-core Dog Eat Dog like stuff. Pretty cool if you still like that. I loved dog Eat Dog's first album and decided I needed more of that. The bands nastasee and All Boro Kings come closest to the old Dog Eat Dog sound (maybe because 70% of those bands are DED members).

Death - Human It's been soooo long since I listened to Death. I think I appreciate this album more now than I ever did back in the day. Such a ridiculously good one.
Autechre - Sign Not sure what to make of this at the moment. It didn't grab me like their stuff usually does. It definitely needs more spins though.

interpol - turn on the bright lights
staggering record. one of the best records to listen to on a miserable, wet and windy autumn evening. makes me miss the one "city" job i ever had. also a good reminded to start dressing better, even if there is no office or class to turn up at. the bass playing is absolutely fucking sick.

Hainbach - Light Splitting Such a beautiful album. I haven't connected to Assertion the same way but I really need to dig into it more. Light Splitting is a golden little album.

gray - shades of...
found out recently that jean-michael basquiat formed a noise/no wave/general experimental nonsense band and so i had to give it a look. terrific stuff. it sounds cool, y'know? fun noisy jazzy hip in the way that's still cool time. exciting and fun.
These songs have made me realise that the only track I knew from this group was actually a remix by another artist - Missing. I just found the original written by the band and now I don't know what to think about life. i probably grew up hearing them on the radio - being britain in the 1990s - but the first time i became really conscious of everything but the girl was hearing a cover of 'missing' by paradise lost that was on some century media sampler i got from a magazine in 2008 or something. i dug it so decided to look up the original and, like yourself, i found the remix and thought "this is banging!" and looked into the band further. i'd listened to, and become obsessed with, their early jangle pop/smiths/r.e.m/orange juice-esque phase to realise that i hadn't actually heard the og everything but the girl 'missing'. heavy stuff man.
here's the paradise lost version:
(i kept typing my dying bride instead of paradise lost because i always get the two confused. both are from yorkshire too - as are everything but the girl!! everything happens so much)
Do ye live in the Scottish Highlands? nah mate, i live in a field with some sheep. in fact, do you know the scene in trainspotting when ewan mcgregor is ranting about how shite it is to be scottish? a bit like that.

noche tras noche - caer y caer
this popped up via the algorithm earlier on and it has a snazzy cover, so i hit play. i dug this. bauhaus meets godflesh darkwave, leaning more on the bauhaus side. someone in the comments said there was an amebix vibe too and i can hear that. just a really decent noisey, gothy record. some really catchy, gloomy guitar lines; makes you want to paint your fingernails black, plug your fender mustang in and scrape all of the varnish off because it's been 13 years and you still don't know how to play a guitar properly.
it's really good though. only 5 songs and 20 minutes long, so it's really more of an EP, but worth a listen lads.

Been listening to a lot of Phil Collins lately as part of my album retrospective I'm doing (link in sig). I'm up to 2002's Testify and it's not great. I love me so Phil Collins, I really do but this album is just... yeah not good. I'm looking forward to finishing this one off, getting the next one (Going Back) written up so I can go back to everything pre-Both Sides.
