MOD EDIT: A bit like Random Thoughts, a thread for chat that doesn't need a new thread of it's own (per band/artist) etc
--------------------
Now that I think about it, Metallica is really the only Metal band I listen to these days. I don't think Ghost counts.
I'd much rather listen to a record like Casualties of Cool than Havok or some other metal band. Maybe that's why this song doesn't really resonate with me. I do like that Lars is saying the songs are going to be simple this time around. Hopefully the mood he is talking about comes through in other songs because the only mood I heard here was "MOM AND DAD I HATE YOUU WAHHHH" teenage angst.

Gojira isn't really my thing.

When you click with them let me know. They are even better live than on record. Now back to Hardwired...

If by moody and mature you mean pompous and boring, I can't, they are neither. Metal Churchs' XI is likely the metal record of the year, that is unless Overkills' tops it. Based on the new song, which isn't horrible, metallica won't do it. FYI, For All Kings and Dystopia are exceptional too.

Overkill is the musical equivalent of diarrhea. Never listened to Metal Church.

Man you guys are brutal.
Overkill and Metal Church don't suck, but you guys shouldn't expect bands from 30 years ago to be releasing amazing albums.
As far as thrash metal goes, the only modern thrash metal band worth listening to nowadays are Vektor imo, their new album is fantastic.
I don't listen to much new music to be honest, just because I'm kinda picky about what I listen to. There's also so much older stuff I haven't heard and when looking for old music all of the shit had been weeded out for you anyway. I usually only buy around 5 new releases a year on average.
This year has been pretty slow , Vektor was fantastic, Gojira and Nails were good but not anything special. Iggy Pop's album was pretty good too.

Overkill has never released anything worthwhile. The singer, whatshisface, is simply unlistenable.
As far as modern thrash bands go, look no further than Finland's Lost Society. They have released three albums since 2013 - Fast Loud Death (2013), Terror Hungry (2014) and Braindead (2016). They are a wild bunch of young guys and a really, really good throwback to the classic 80s thrash style.

BORT is here with his BAG AE TUNES. this is one of my favourite records of this year, made by my BAE dominick fernow (prurient/cold cave) in his guise as vatican shadow, media in the service of terror (full album link) .
it's a techno record but don't be put off, any fan of industrial, noise, darkwave, general GOFF and dance music will get a great kick aff this record. it's soooo good. Please dont mention those generic thrash bands... They are in a different genre to Mastodon and Gojira. people can suggest what music they want to. mastodon and gojira are hardly ornette coleman, mate. ABODY BE NICE AND RESPECT WAN ANITHER, RICHT.

Does anyone else love those long, meandering sections that don't really seem to go anywhere but just float along? I'm thinking stuff like the middle section of Where Eagles Dare (which ends up taking up 74% of the song). One of my favorites.

Yeah, I often do really like that. Often times when bands do that a lot of people will say that it sounds "bloated," even if the music seems to flow perfectly naturally.

Yup, Frayed Ends' middle section also has it to some extent, and I've heard it described as just that (bloated) around here.

Yep, love that stuff and Where Eagles Dare is a great Maiden song. Book of Souls is criticised for too much of that but that album grew on me quickly

The Red and the Blacks's instrumental section meanders all over the fucking place, and as such is called "bloated" a lot, but I absolutely love it to death. Still my all-time favorite Maiden song.

I really like that one too, but didn't go down live as well as I thought it might. Probably included to try and get that crowd chant going.

I guess what I'm really looking for at the mo is metal with vocals of the Araya or Hetfield calibre. When I was 14 I didn't give a shit about who could play double bass drums or sweep pick, I was drawn to powerful sounding guitars with charismatic frontmen. I want to recapture that, but it seems impossible. That singer from Evile I actually dig, but the music is a shameless Slayer/Metallica rip off, without the million dollar production.

If you are in for dark melodic metal with clean vocals, try Evergrey's earlier works. The last two albums are pretty good too. It's just earlier albums are darker and more progressive. Yes,I'm trying to get used to the new Evergrey album.
As for Overkill, Ironbound is pretty good.I enjoyed that album a lot.
