Anyone else thinks that Metallica's seemingly strange behaviour of the last few years (ie. lack of new album, cash grab tours/live appearances, cash grab back catalogue remasters) has everything to do with them gearing up to buy out their catalogue from Warner and starting their own label in 2014 (and to a less extent, to recoup financial losses from failed festival and film projects)?
Also... couldn't find any official website, however I found this: www.corporationwiki.com/California/Los-Angeles/blackened-recordings-inc/108481295.aspx Interesting how many companies James, Lars and Kirk own between them (and how Rob doesn't).
Thoughts?

I'd say it's more like an end of career wind down. Bulk up that retirement pot.

They've always wanted to own their own shit, which is understandable

Nope. It's about control. it always has been and it always will. cash grab tours/live appearances, cash grab back catalogue remasters
If you think that they play gigs for money you're barking up the wrong tree. Also, pretty sure that they lost money on the remasters so far. The amount it costs to put that box together versus the RRP? They don't need more money. Even the loss of money on TTN wouldn't have affected them as it would have been paid for out of a separate company set up for that very reason. A band this far along in their career with the cache and cultural impact that they have had/still has, has very little to do with money.

Jaysee, I never said they needed that money to increase their personal wealth, I'm saying they did for the Warner buy-out. I can only speculate, but I'm sure the losses from Through The Never are nowhere near close to what Warner wanted to let go of such a big asset. The deal must have also included massive lawyer/legal charges. Not like Facebook buying Whatsapp for $19b, but still. I'd like to get my hands on figures, really.

I bet when they signed their original contract, the company was like, these guys will be dead or broken up by the time they'll get back their rights. I'm really happy that Metallica stuck it out and are now in their position.
