I never really listened to DT and am very unfamiliar with His(their?) Music. Just got added to a metal festival I'm going to this summer for an acoustic set(?) So I got some homework to do. Where do I start? Recommendations?
Cool, a full acoustic set would be interesting to see as he is heavy on the effects and electronics. Quirky guy with a great voice and a lot of albums under the belt. Ocean Machine: Biomech is awesome and most fans would agree it being a high point. I love Terria and Ki, both of which are a bit more chill

Where do I start? Recommendations? Accelerated Evolution is my fav album by him cos it has this: You just need to be aware that his albums vary a lot. Some of his stuff is just too quirky for me and I can't really get into it but some of his stuff is amazing.

Where do I start? Recommendations? hmm very hard to tell...he has a very extensive discography. considering you wish to be prepared for a concert, perhaps few songs instead of albums might be better to start with. even better to check few setlists from setlist.fm Grace, deadhead, vampira, bad devil, truth, kingdom, hyperdrive, terminal, supercrush, failure are few songs that came to my mind. for albums; ziltoid the omniscient: for a quirky alien themed funny, heavy larger than life album. Ki: for a unique acoustic album with mostly a calm vibe but with some surprisingly heavy bits. Deconstruction: For a crazy, complex, very heavy experimental stuff Empath: Extremely well done, experimental, symphonic, heavy album with lots of different colors and layers Transcendence and Epicloud: These two albums are standart Devin Townsend works. Easier to get into. They are both pretty cool albums with some very good songs. Addicted: Thsi one doesn't take itself too seriously but it is a very entertaining record. Almost like a pop album (this is one of the four albums of Devin Townsend Project Quadrology). It serves as the easy going fun going within this 4 albums period of his work. The other 3 are; Ki (acoustic, groovy and at times heavy), Deconstruction ( highly complex, loud and very heavy album), Ghost (a very calm, almost like an ambient album). The guy composed all 4 at the same time if I'm not mistaken. Regarding his previous works; Ocean Machine, Accelerated Evolution, Terria and Synchestra are must listen DT albums The first two albums are considered his bests but my personal favourite is Synchestra from this period

My fave DT albums are Ocean Machine, Physicist, Terria, Infinity, Accelerated Evolution and Ziltoid. All his other albums I usually only like a few tracks from each. His post sobriety music doesn't do it as much for me, but glad he's in a better place in his life.

I love the whimsy and grandeur of the new album, but that third DTP-lite song is really out of place and unremarkable. Top notch stuff apart from that.

Been exploring his stuff, I like that song with the cartoon cat in space in the video. What else sounds like that one?

That I can remember anyway. I mean, DT generally = His voice, lots of melody, tons of layers, effects, and delay. DT sounds like DT typically despite any specific style differences between songs and albums.

Just finishing up listening to Empath for the first time. To be honest I didn't find it that exciting. There are some really cool moments, but I think it's going to need a few more spins before I can appreciate it properly.

Where do I start? Recommendations? hey man, I don't know if you had already gone to that concert but if you haven't seen him yet, I'd suggest to start with latter albums but add some classics from his earlier works like Kingdom, Deadhead e.t.c. One thing is certain though...you may not like his music, who knows, but I think you will appreciate his showmanship.

I love the whimsy and grandeur of the new album, but that third DTP-lite song is really out of place and unremarkable. Top notch stuff apart from that. Now the new album excitedness wore off, I could do without Evermore too. Clearly this is a thoroughly enjoyable album still. I need to get in the mindframe that I apply to all old bands, Devin is now a veteran musician and so good albums are a bonus/pleasant surprise; and the edge and invention I have to get from newer acts.

By the way, I was way wrong about the new DT album. It's grown massively on me. Really really dig it.

By the way, I was way wrong about the new DT album. It's grown massively on me. Really really dig it. Thx man. I'm doing ok. Busy with life matters. Less time for personal fun and new music discoveries. How are you? Yes, the new album contains a lot of things. It needs a lot of listening to actually get familiar with the songs. I gave it a few listens. I liked it a lot. But I just can't make myself to sit through and concentrate on the details.

A little bit the same but I should have a fraction more time after the next couple of weeks. I need to get back into some creative stuff. Glad to see you're doing well though! It's a dense album for sure. I'm digging the extra stuff on the special edition a lot though.
