I'm just happy he's still alive. ...this. Jason was the reason I play bass the way I do. He was a huge influence on me growing up. But the only thing I liked post-Metallica was Echobrain. But as long as he's happy and well - it's all good.

I liked Newsted (the band). I hope he continues with them.
Would and steal sounds kind of stupid.

It'll be average at best, like most things he does. This will be a distant memory soon.

Reasons to care about Jason Newsted: - He 'kept it metal' during the Load days (i.e. wore Machine Head shirts). - Proved that Blacky's (Voivod) haircut will turn any metal nerd into a badass. - Wrote a cool intro on TBA. - With his infamous "die motherfucker die" on Liveshit Seattle, pioneered the try-too-hard-slash-tuffguy-metal attitude years before Pantera.
Reason not to worry when he disappears: everyone thought he died just before recording AJFA, yet next thing you know he was up there on stage barking "die motherfucker die".

Machine Head and Pantera and Sepultura sucked, so it's good Newsted never got that influence in. I just always liked Kirk and Jason more because as #3 and #4 they were always able to come across as laid back, goofy and honest. Lars is perpetually stuck in A&R/PR mode and Hetfield had the badass machismo bullshit persona and now the uninteresting happy happy joy joy personality.
(I don't care about the band that much or scoopedmids fatecious post, it's just a good excuse as any to reinforce how much Machine Head suck).

Never could stand these bands' stupid attitudes either, though I did like some Pantera songs and earlier Sepultura. Machine Head were the absolute worst

If you haven't, you should watch this. This is why Jason did what he did: Watch that entire video if you haven't. It's very revealing. He didn't, as Lars claims, leave the band, nor at anytime, as implied by SKOM, want to rejoin.
With all due respect to the other members, Jason saved that band. Newsted {the album} was easily more metal than anything Metallica has done since Metallica released.

And it's with those two statements that you lost me. Sorry but in no way did Jason save the band. He was, and remained so until the day he quit, a hired hand, hence why the band never respected his demos and treated him the way they did. It wasn't until after SA and therapy that they were able to treat Rob in the way that they should have treated Jason. If it wasn't Jason, it would have been some other random bass player. The proof? Take away the songwriting credits that Newsted had (Blackened, MFOM, WTWTA). None of those tunes were key to the band's development and history. No. Newsted's album was generic riffs that lacked originality. There's nothing on that album that can even approach the greatness of Bleeding Me, The epic scope of Outlaw Torn, the unbrideled fury of All Within My Hands..... sorry. No.

I'd forgotten that the fan boi runs deep here and that rational thought isn't looked on kindly. Any other bass player would't have tolerated the years of disrespect and bullshit they put him through, and told them to fuck off. He loved that band. Then, after all of that, when he wanted to stretch a bit, James killed a deal that his managers were really excited about. Did you ever think that Hetfield and Ulrich didn't use his work on purpose? You are trying to tell me he only brought in 3 good musical ideas in 14 years? Bullshit. Bleeding Me Great? Outlaw is not epic, unless you add "ly boring" to it. Also don't you find it odd that they waited to play the one song he wrote for the bland album until AFTER he left? and the one he got credit for during load era they have never played? They shit on him. Edit: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doomsday_for_the_Deceiver

Firstly, unless you're confusing this board with the old official Metallica BB, "fan boi" does not run deep here. In fact quite the opposite. There is far more criticism here of Metallica than there was at MetBB. Secondly, if I WAS as "fan boi" as you suggest, my response who have been to AGREE with your point of how Newsted "saved the band". Thirdly, we'll never know how much any other bass player would have tolerated as it's hypothetical. But as you point out, Jason loved Metallica so took their shit for years. The final breaking point being when he was not allowed to take Echobrain "to the next level". Ironically the only one that's coming across as a "fan boi" here is you given that your post is all pro-Jason. Fourth, no I don't think Lars & James didn't use Jason's work on purpose. The writing core of Metallica has ALWAYS been those two. I simply think Jason's ideas weren't good enough. My basis for this thinking? Well firstly, if the kind of generic tat he put out on Newsted is any indication to go by it's no wonder he only got a hand of credits. He himself has also said that when you have a riff writer like Hetfield in your band, it's kinda hard to come up with anything that matches that level. Fifth, I don't find it odd, no. Simply because they never wanted to play that song (and a couple of others on that album) until they decided to acknowledge an anniversary of TBA. No 'hidden agenda' or 'conspiracy' about that. You seem to be under the misapprehension that I am defending the way Lars & James treated Jason. I'm not. Far from it. I wish they had been better people and not such total dicks to him. He was, after all, the reason I picked up a bass guitar. But he did not save then band. And nothing he has done since he left is "more metal". That last one is subjective, I know, but Unnamed Feeling is (IMO) miles heavier than Soldierhead (for example). I'm sure others agree and others may well disagree. I get that you're one of these fans that can't see pass 1989. That's fine, if a touch myopic. But let's not go crazy here. Newsted was not a saviour, he was an excellent bass player who helped the band achieve the success the did in non-direct ways (ie the songs). And if you can't accept that others think that songs post-1990 are as good (and for some better) than some songs from the 80s then 'Anything Metallica' is going to be a tough place for you to stomach.

Yeah, I gotta say that even though Jason Newsted is one of my all-time favorite music people and was definitely my #1 idol during my teen years when I found Metallica... He was always just "some guy", disposable, and not as much a real member of the band as the other guys. He was never the songwriter James and Lars were, and still are. He never ever "saved" Metallica.
And I hate to do this, but seriously. It's 2016, are we still using the "more metal" argument? REALLY? You have an official measuring stick for that? A rule book? Get the fuck outta here.

I'll be interested to read yep-sure's thoughts when he catches sight of this thread..... I'm not sure what I can add that you haven't already said. The thing with Jason fanboys, is that despite all logic and evidence to the contrary, there is still this veil of blind worship that impossible to break through in a debate and discussion - the belief that Jason is a brilliant songwriter, an all around badass, a genuine musician that is only motivated by the love of music, that was so hard done and held back by and held back by James and Lars, is just so strong with these people that it's often pointless engaging in rational discussion with them. But fuck it, we've got 2 hours till the live stream starts - let's address the BS with some facts: Claims: "Where The Wild Things Are" hasn't been played live to "shit on" Jason. "My Friend Of Misery" was only played live after Jason left the band to "shit on Jason". Facts: "Blackened" has been played 473 times live. Jason played his "My Friend of Misery" bass solo at pretty much every gig on the Black Album and Load tours. James Hetfield has lyrics from "Where The Wild Things Are" tattooed on his body. If Metallica wanted to "shit on" Jason by ignoring the songs he contributed to by not playing them live, or by only playing them live after he left the band, then the above would never have occurred. Claim: "Metallica deliberately ignored Jason's musical contributions". Fact: Jason has three writing credits with Metallica. If the above claim were true, he would have none. Do you really believe that James and Lars sat there and said "Man, I really want to keep ignoring all of this guys music but this Blackened/My Friend Of Misery/Where The Wild Things Are riff is just too good to leave behind. We'll use this but nothing else. fuck that guy!" Claim: Jason couldn't get his creativity out in Metallica, and wanted to do it outside of the band but James wouldn't let him. Fact: Jason created and played a lot of music outside of Metallica. It's when Jason wanted to turn one of these projects into a commercial, money making venture, that James had a problem with it and shut it down. Claim: Jason's Heavy Metal Music contains songs that are "more metal" than anything Metallica have put out since he left the band. Fact: This is, of course, subjective but I'm sure we can agree that Metal does not necessarily mean good. Also, I'd say that St. Anger and parts of Death Magnetic were "more metal" than Heavy Metal Music. Not necessarily better, but "more metal"? Absolutely. Claim: Jason saved the band. Fact: I agree. He saved the band by leaving. The band were in crisis and were undertaking group therapy to get back on track. He was holding that process back, when he left, they could progress through the process without hindrance. Claim: No other bass player would have put up with the disrespect Jason did, he loved that band! Fact: We'll never know this. One could argue that Jason stayed because of the money, not because he "loved the band". One could argue that no other bass player would have received the disrespect Jason did, because another bass player may have stood up for himself. One could argue that no other bass player would have left the band during a crisis because he was told he couldn't sell, promote and tour his pop-rock side project. Who knows, it's a stupid claim.
