Lars isn't as bad as he's made out to be nor is he as good as the fanboys say he is.
Out of him and Kirk - he's definitely improved over the years to the point where he almost never trainwrecks a song anymore like he used to back in 2006 or so.
Nowadays it's just his tempo that needs work.

He's a good drummer. Not great. But still does a pretty decent job.

He's a good drummer. Not great. But still does a pretty decent job. This, for me. I do have a special place in my chubby heart for Lars for reasons I've discussed elsewhere. I like him as a person, both the person he presents in interviews (the public persona) and the one I got to see first hand. I do wish he would leave that bloody China alone but I'm also relaxed enough to let my personal aversion to it's frequency, go.

He is still one of my favorite drummers and his influence always comes through when I program a drum track.

To this day, I don't understand the china. Except that maybe it sounds good to Lars' poor ears. Read Jordison's article on blabbermouth where he said that he and Lars have different technical skills sets. Not sure if Lars necessarily has a skill set (jokes), but they sure are different drummers. Metal is a pretty linear style these days and Lars plays in a more organic way, I guess. Helps facilitate the wall-of-sound vibe.

lars was really good pre-2004. post-2004 he varies from bad to kinda good, slowly leaning towards the kinda good side in recent years.

Lars in 2016 is another world away from where he was in 2004.
He's a lot more solid these days and his tempo still varies but not as wildly as it did in 2004.
He says he's been practicing lately and it shows.

While the the china is pretty darn weird, I do think that a ride wouldn't fit the current sound at all. Only on the obvious ones like Bleeding Me, Sleeps etc. He should just på a high hat on his right like earlier on

Lars is an interesting drummer. It's not just his trademark offbeat accentuation (bit borrowed from Phil Taylor btw). His interaction with Hetfield has always fascinated me and he's tried so many things over the years. On KEA he took what Abbaddon (Venom) was doing and took it to the next level of aggression and everyone copied it. Then on AJFA it's almost James who's the drummer, i.e. the rhythmic foundation comes from the guitars with the drums layered atop, with a very dry and trebly production than make them sound like percussions. That also was copied by death metal drummers, then Pantera, Meshuggah and eventually it paved the way for djent (urgh). Then on TBA he did a 180° and became almost like Phil Rudd. And then came St Anger (funny how no one copied that this time!)
So he deffo inspired a lot of metal drummers in the 80s. Not bad for such a "shitty drummer" who "can't even play double bass". Personally I don't care if he can't shred anymore, but his tempo these days is a bit of a problem.

His drumming on Hardwired is pretty damn good, live also. I don't know shit about drumming though lol.
