I have a few questions about Load/Reload
1) I know Metallica entered the studio in May 1995...Did they have any songs demoed by this point? Are any of the earliest demos from 1995 available anywhere?
2) When was the bulk of the material on Load recorded? I've read recording ended in February 1996; Why did it take 4 months to come out?
3) How finished was Reload when Load was released?
4) Why weren't the albums released as a double album?
5) When exactly (month) in 1996 did Metallica cut their hair? Not the exact day, just the month roughly?

I think Reload was mostly done - all the drums were from the Load sessions * i think * and they re-did all the guitars. I'm not 100%

Not the exact day, just the month roughly? 1. They had some songs demoed, check YouTube. 2. Not sure 3. Like Masto said, they had the drum tracks down and some of the guitars. 4. Because the songs that became Reload weren't ready yet. 5. They all cut their hair at different times.

Basically an album by any major or mid-tier band takes at least 4 months to come out after completion. Usually it's because of the marketing plan by the record label.

Newsted had his hair buzzed off by '93, and James kind of went from a full head to that crank-cook mullet thing around '95, before going to the short hair in '96. I'm of the belief that cutting the hair was much more a practical thing than some effort to remain fashionable. After doing something one way for 15-20 years, it's not inconceivable that one might fancy a change.
