How do you prefer to hear the new songs for the first time? I remember seeing that they had played cyinade live when death magnetic was coming out and almost didn't want to hear the live version first on a crappy YouTube video. Would you rather hear new songs live or wait for the studio version to come out before hearing them live? Unless your actually at the concert of course.

In the era of LiveMetallica, I'm ok with hearing it live first. Back in the day it's how I heard 2x4 (UIS single). I'll even check out crappy bootlegs. IF there's a new Metallica song I want to hear it in any way I can!

Normally I prefer hearing recordings of new music first, but I wouldn't mind a new song debut at the Minneapolis show since I'll be there.

I don't mind new songs presented live, it's fun to go check 'em out after the record is released

They should play the whole album live at HQ and stream it, and then immediately have the option to download the new album afterwards.

To be honest, it's been such a long while since the last album, I don't even remember how I first heard a new Metallica song. And that makes me sad.

I like what they did for the anniversary shows. Play it live, release the studio version immediately.

Or the premiere of Cyanide in 2008? Anniversary shows were those four nights at the Fillmore? I remember that, but mainly because of Youtube. Did they play new songs there, though? And no, I have no memory of hearing Cyanide for the first time. Not even a memory remains.

The anniversary shows were awesome - I remember being in the MetClub chat. We were all going nuts over the setlist, then the first BM track, Hate Train started appearing in our emails. As they played each BM song live on each of the four nights, they sent the studio MP3's out to all MetClubbers at the same time. And I remember hearing Cyanide, in that awful quality YouTube video. I remember thinking "Woah, it's like a more modern Justice style song" because of that complete change in the middle breakdown section. I also remember the lyrics being slightly different but I think that was Het sung them wrong live. We all went crazy hearing that! Good times!

You're really disconnected from Metallica-land huh?

Okay, somehow I thought that Beyond Magnetic was released before the anniversary shows. And come on, it was almost five years ago. I can barely remember what I did last week!

Wasn't a criticism duder, I think I was a bit taken aback that you had forgotten the biggest new music even since DM. All good

Not taken as a criticism at all. I'm just such a scatterbrain nowadays, events that far back are really just a blur to me.

Oh, yeah. How do I prefer it? Studio version is the best way to go. A third-rate phone cam recording is far from optimal, but if that's the best I can get, I suppose I will listen to it.
BUT I WON'T LIKE IT, LET ME TELL YA.

Really good times, the anniversary shows were beyond awesome, they happened in the morning here so I could follow from work. When the mails started arriving everyone went nuts. I remember thinking Hate Train was the best thing I had ever heard It's was pure joy. It still dig the song though. Was in Turkey with my GF at the time Cyanide premiered, I got a text from a buddy telling me about it and I went completely nuts, I had to hear it. It was a really hot day end instead of going to the beach with her we wandered the streets to find a freaking Internetbar. When we finally found one almost every website containing anything Metallica related was blocked. I spent hours and hours trying to find some clip and when I finally found one one some weird site, it was the worst quality ever But I could make out he "Suicide, I've already died" clip from the Mission Metallica trailer and I was lavetating. Even though my gf was a Metallica fan too, she wasn't quite as pleased with spending 5 hours on it

That would be cool if they streamed the whole album live before the album released. Kind of like what they did with the St.Anger DVD.....but.....live.

It would be cool to hear 1 or 2 songs in a crappy smartphone live recording and then hear the rest on the album. I've never been part of the whole new album thing so yeah.

I remember hearing Cyanide the first time live. That was fucking awesome. I liked the idea of streaming them playing the album at HQ then offering the album for download after.

Maybe they'd do this the night before the August show, and then the next day play a few new songs at the gig, this way they control the first stream on their site and social media outlets, the cellphone vids from the concert would be overshadowed by the previous nights premier, and then, a few weeks later physical copies would be sold in stores. So for a month or so, Metallica could gain 100% Profit off of digital downloads from Metallica. Com.

Interesting that everyone talks about Cyanide being the first song from DM they heard. Coz I recall the first taste of new stuff was Day. They played it on the radio here (never do you hear Metallica on radio here apart from NEM and Sandman and even that is rare). So they are playing Day and they stop it halfway in to ask for opinions, then put on the 2nd half before Metallica fans called in for the head of the person that stopped it

send unmarked tapes to the journalists and they can tell us whether it is good or not like the olden days
personal bartolio storytime: the only track i can recall hearing before death magnetic actually came out (eh, only track from the album. chillax) was 'the day that never comes' and i believe that it was on the radio and i lurched between liking it and not liking it for seven almost eight years a good few weeks. that was good though, i liked haven only really heard the lead single before hearing the album. something like that this time/forever would be good.

They should leak the album and tag it as an album by Am I blood before releasing it physically as Metallica.
