Why is neither team in red? Portugal was the home team, so they would've worn their red uniform. But because it apparently was too similar to the Welsh secondary uniform, UEFA forced both to using secondary uniforms. Go figure.

I can just imagine it. Four extra groups, top two go through, with the eight best 3rd place finishes also going through to make up the round of 32. The four worst 3rd placed teams drop to the Europa, which also has some best 3rd placed teams going to the knockout stage to make up for the Champions League shortfall. It'd be a money spinner, which is why UEFA and a load of clubs would love it. Smaller clubs would probably love it, the bigger ones + their fans would hate hate hate it

i guess the only real possible advantage of that is that there's a vauge chance we'll get a spot (or at least have to go through less qualifiers) in the champions league...?
were they not thinking of expanding the world cup to 40 teams? i seem to recall blatter floating that idea a couple of years back (of course, it was lost in all of the other stuff). the logic given was to increase the allocated slots of asia, africa and north american teams but, despite his laudable efforts in encouraging non european/latin american international competition, i suspect $$$ might also be the reason.

thanks mate I'm still maintaining my prediction, but I want France now. Portuguese teams (club level too) just never have answers for the big german vertical panzer :( France kicked us out in the semis before so making them suffer in front of their cuntry would be quite ace. i admire that want to cause upset. i fucking love europe. feel as tho the better chance will be vs france whereas i fear germany will just monster portugal like spain did to italy in 2012 (different reasons, portugal aren't an absolute shambles with a pirlo like figure in the middle as were 2012 italy. magic, i think, is the reason they beat germany). i hope not because for whatever reason i'm really behind portugal for this match. sticking with germany vs portugal for the final, the former winning: can't tell yet if germany are to go totally tonto and score plenty or get a goal or two up and just pin them down. no necessarily a comment upon the standard of football, tho i am in love with this match, but my days are going to lose so much meaning and time will melt into itself once this tournament ends. all that structure, gone. These national anthems brah, these national anthems!! both of them, solid top 10s. les marseillais perhaps is only rivalled by uruguay (ace) and argentina (also bloodthirsty against neighbours/oppressors).

never a more poignant, yet absent anthem: Oh Flower of Scotland, when will we see... you play football in a major tournament again? yes, after we play our luck vs lithuania, slovenia and slovakia and after we gub england. twice. going into the russia 2018 qualifiers with allllll the optimism, 90% of it misplaced. :) as for anthem chat, i can't figure out where it would sit in a potential ranking. see it's good 'cause it's about telling a neighbouring country to fuck off. bad 'cause that was 700 years ago. good 'caues 700 years on it still has emotional resonance. bad because they've gubbed us at everything ever since. also bad 'cause it's boring af. the corries are decent but it's too melancholy to be sung with pride by idiot fucking rugby fans. it's a difficult one.

see it looked both like he may have volleyball punched it but it also looked super accidental (not that that is an excuse but the range + speed, idk what he could've done).

Never mind, I thought it had hit his left trailing arm.
Though in general the point stands. Trigger happy refs will soon forbid the players from having arms.

Players will soon play with arms tied ffs. To me, initially it looked like his arm was way out in an unnatural position. Just seen a super slow-mo replay, think he might have been trying to get an arm on Evra's shoulder to get some leverage but was well off the pace. I'm a little less sure now, but I'm unsurprised it has been given.

France only convincing performance was against the average Iceland, and now two gifted goals.
Two lame finalists.
