a lot of (non-icelandic) folk have been getting desperately sad and overwrought re this defeat ("Poor Iceland" is trending on twitter in the UK...) but, like, they were gubbed by a far superior team. most of us saw the defeat as inevitable, really.
obviously still a great accomplishment for a country with a population < that of aberdeen and with few, if any, semi-professional football teams but they are good and proof of what you can acheive with government action (easy to with a super wee, centralised population BUT) and appreciating your limits and instead exporting your players (SCOTLAND, LEARN FROM THIS SCOTLAND**). i'm reasonably confident that they'll get at least a playoff bearth for the world cup in 2018 but for now they can look back on a well prepared, gutsy and solid campaign!
**NB the fucking championship, even the goddamn premiership, is not really exporting your players. we need to send our players proper abroad.

It's human nature to support the underdog. However expected the result was, it was still disappointing to see them eliminated.

Calling it a Portugal x Germany final. you? If there is any justice in the world, Wales vs. France. I won't mind Wales vs. Germany, either. Just as long as Wales wins tonight.

Yeah, I don't want Wales to go and the opposite for Portugal.

I think Portugal might edge it tonight, 1-0 or 1-1 with a win on pens. France to edge it tomorrow, 2-1. 2-0 to France in the final.

i hope portugal use pure misery to grind out a 1-0 extra time win to deny the english press the underdog story they want. that plus envy 'cause we didn't get to the finals and i can't bear to have home country actually get a shot to win this thing, naw.
germany vs portugal is what i think and what i want.

Please Barty, no extra time. I have to get ready and leave for work at the 90 minute mark. If there is any extra time or penalty shoot outs, I don't get to watch. :'(

thanks mate
I'm still maintaining my prediction, but I want France now. Portuguese teams (club level too) just never have answers for the big german vertical panzer :( France kicked us out in the semis before so making them suffer in front of their cuntry would be quite ace.

Portugal/France would be a much better final to watch than a Portugal/Germany one.

Portugal/France would be a much better final to watch than a Portugal/Germany one. Why? I feel like Germany have been really boring/frustrating to watch during this tournament. Way too defensive and.. Mechanical? I'm sure it's going to be an entertaining final either way, I've just enjoyed watching France more and think they'd play a bit more passionately and offensively. But hey I'm a football noob so what do I know.

I can just imagine it. Four extra groups, top two go through, with the eight best 3rd place finishes also going through to make up the round of 32. The four worst 3rd placed teams drop to the Europa, which also has some best 3rd placed teams going to the knockout stage to make up for the Champions League shortfall. It'd be a money spinner, which is why UEFA and a load of clubs would love it.
