this reminds me of the end of the belgium vs italy match: england will keep going and getting chance after chance but iceland will hang in the box and hopefully get lucky. an equaliser wouldn't surprise me but a late third for iceland wouldn't either. either way, who'd have thought that wales would be the most convincing of the home nations (inc ROI)? Of course he did, where else is he getting his crispy pancakes and White Lightening? that you can buy tins in iceland, a recent discovery for me, is the very very best thing. |

unfortunately Spain and Italy couldn't both lose. The narrative of "Italy doesn't have stars this time, they have to be plucky" is appealing, but fuck Italian football. Always the cynicism and dark arts, will never root for that. And besides, they have Juve players, which means they should start all games with a 3-0 deficit.

the host on the ITV show asked if maybe the players were tired from the "really long" season they've just come out of...unlike, y'know, the majority of players from every other team in the tournament. i think it was ian wright at that moment who said "i don't care" and one of the other ones who popped up with "iceland have played the same team in every game so far" i suspect there'll be a post mortem on the campaign, but due to political issues in the UK and the FA (having to look for a new manager) it won't be a public one, which i think will be fair; very young team, first international tournament for many, wales better than expected, igi. trying to ram rooney in, tournament after tournament, however, surely has to be unforgivable by now. also forgotten in space , excellent private eye reference there |

I had a guy from Liverpool (Everton supporter) as English teacher in Uni..he used to read Private Eye during our exams, and burst out laughing during..once a girl actually asked him if he could stay silent, it was distracting, yadda yadda, but he just looked her straight in the eye and laughed even harder.
Absolute legend that guy (he actually wrote a lot of comedy for our TV, I recently found).
