Anyone listen to a lot of symphonic metal? I know it's usually really cheesy and over the top, but when it's done right all that cheese can be really epic and gorgeous.
My personal favorite band in the genre is Epica. Design Your Universe is one of my favorite albums ever, and their most recent album The Quantum Enigma is also quite good, even if the songwriting feels a little safe. A new album is currently being recorded and I believe is scheduled for this autumn, so I'm excited. Hopefully they continue developing their newly revamped sound with some more interesting songwriting.
Best single symphonic metal song, though, is Nightwish's The Poet and the Pendulum IMO. Unfortunately, their most recent album is really mediocre and a massive waste of Floor Jansen's incredible abilities.

I'm not really into symphonic metal, but I think this particular song is really good:

I was never much into symphonic metal until I took my girlfriend to see Nightwish a few months ago with Delain and Sonata Arctica. I thought all the bands sounded great and I've since picked up Nightwish, Delain and Epica's most recent albums and really dug them. I don't know that i'll ever get really into the genre like I am with thrash or prog, but i'll definitely check out new material by these bands when it comes out.

Mediocre symphonic metal at best.

I'm not really into symphonic metal, but I think this particular song is really good: Yup, Floor Jansen is so freaking incredible here. That's a large part of why their most recent album was so disappointing. Nightwish + Floor Jansen was supposed to be godly, and it just wasn't.

I much prefer when symphony / orchestration is worked into metal vs. the symphonic metal genre. Know that might be nit picky but there's a difference for me.

A lot of the time when people talk about "symphonic metal," they're referring to a fairly particular style that was created by Therion in the mid-1990s and also includes bands such as Nightwish, After Forever, Epica, Within Temptation and (arguably) Kamelot and Sonata Arctica. You could call things like S&M symphonic metal, and you wouldn't be incorrect, but there's a more specific meaning of the term which is what I believe icedguardian is referring to.

Pretty much how waunakonor described it.
Symphonic Metal as a genre, for me typically has female vocals quite prevalent throughout. Either as the main vocalist or as a counterpoint to a male clean vocalist. And I don't really dig that. Whereas metal that works orchestration or an orchestra into their sound, doesn't. It could include bands like Blind Guardian, or heck even Dimmu Borgir (although I don't like them).
I guess I'm saying I don't really like the genre Symphonic Metal, but like/are open to when a symphony is incorporated into metal.

I'm not really into symphonic metal, but I think this particular song is really good: Yeah this here got me into my current symphonic bender, this one is fantastic too. Need more, anything around with virtuoso musicians and a female singer?
