Inspired by the Load and Reload thread.
Rank the album cover art of Metallica's studio albums. If you want I guess you can add live albums/cover albums as well.

On the subject of the TBA cover i could swear some have a grey snake/tallica sign but others are purple.

My list (not entirely sure but more or less): S&M Master of puppets Ride the lightning Reload St. Anger Kill 'em all ...And justice for all Garage inc. Metallica Death magnetic Load What du you like about the S&M cover ? I'm often fond of "clean" covers so that one fits very well for my taste. It's simple in the most positive sense of the word. Don't really know if clean is the correct term in English really, but if it's any help for you I'm referring to the Swedish word stilren/stilrent. Other examples of that type of aesthetics in album covers could be Is this it by The Strokes and Velvet Underground & Nico I guess.

Well I understand your reasoning but I just don't really see it in the context of the album. I've always felt like it was a wasted opportunity of doing some cool cover art with metal meeting the symphony :)

My reasoning is more or less only based on the cover art itself and not how well it reflects the album. The same goes for my whole list I think. It's always great if the album cover reflects how the album sounds/themes of the album (Master of puppets is a good example that both looks good and fits with the theme of the album) but it's not the most important thing for me and especially not if the album art in itself is great if you get what I mean.

KEA - really reflects the direct, aggressive approach of the album, and is just a really striking image. MoP - great cover that really sets the atmosphere for the album, I'm only putting it below KEA because the sausage fingers bug me. Load - just a very cool interesting image and also a bold one that reflects the change of musical approach.
Eh, the rest are pretty mediocre really, RTA and AJFA are next best I suppose.
Cover art is something they could improve on after Death Magnetic which looks really half-arsed, like it got finished at 17:02 on a Friday.

I honestly don't really think their album covers are anything special. I kind of like The Black Album for its simplicity though. Letting the music speak for itself.

Master of Puppets (Epic, I could look at it all day) Kill 'Em All ...And Justice For All Ride the Lightning (Actually used to be my favorite, but that was before I really looked at it closely. When I got the boxset and really took a good look at the vinyl cover, I realized that it actually looks a little tacky. I think it probably didn't age well since the mid-eighties. Still got the best version of the Metallica logo though) St. Anger Reload Metallica (Just took The Beatles' idea and added a snake. *yawn*) Load (Another cover that's cooler if you don't look at it too closely) Death Magnetic

Best: Justice Worst: St. Anger I agree with that. I've always liked the back of Justice album (other than Cliff not being on it) Also, the $5.98 Garage album is a great one, probably my favourite
