The vibe in the room was a little moody too. S&M2 was my third Metallica show and contrasting with the first two, the whole band seemed very serious the whole show outside of a couple of Lars babble moments (I almost feel like these were added into the show to bring some levity), and when they started loosening up for the greatest hits at the end. I chalked it up to crazy stress and focus, because I have to guess it was their most musically challenging thing they did since learning 80 songs for the 30th anniversary shows. The news about James gave the vibe huge context after the fact, but it was felt immediately. The guy I sat next to also made a comment during the intermission about how buttoned up they were acting. That makes sense. There is a bit of that uptightness still in the live shows. I don't want to be 'old man yells at cloud' but there was a sense of looseness in the 90s that has gone now. The show feels more scripted (intro tapes to blame for that) and I think the MASSIVE doughnut stage means that they are kinda disconnected from each other so it seems like a more stilted show. I get it: things change. People change. They're probably more focused on giving the best show they can now than the were in their 20s/30s. But I do miss that vibe some times. Totally agree. I’d extend that timeframe to include 2003-2019 too. I think they started using transitions and tapes more heavily in 2016-19 but not like today. It blows my mind how the Death Magnetic era felt like the “modern” era for so long, but now those shows feel so different. I watched Copenhagen 2009 recently and it was like how you’re describing; loose, unscripted, 4 dudes on a square stage playing music. Firmly believe they hate the circle stage and will never use it again after Mexico this year.

I really liked LoS bar the lyric. It's interesting because Metallica would've never released a song like that in the 80's or 90's.

Pretty sure LOS lyrics are the closest James got to Kill 'Em All since the 80s. I don't think either are revolutionary, but they're both just fantasy battle lyrics essentially.

Firmly believe they hate the circle stage and will never use it again after Mexico this year. Totally. I think the DM live era was the last time I felt things could get weird with setlists. Checking metallica.com and/or board the day after a gig for the setlist to see what randoms they pulled out to play. It was more contained than the SA era or sure but still there was a sense of variety. This is the setlist I got when I saw them in Newcastle (UK) in 2009. I mean... Killing Time?!?!?! THAT WAS JUST YOUR LIFE THE END OF THE LINE HARVESTER OF SORROW NO REMORSE ONE BROKEN, BEAT & SCARRED CYANIDE SAD BUT TRUE NO LEAF CLOVER THE JUDAS KISS THE DAY THAT NEVER COMES MASTER OF PUPPETS BLACKENED NOTHING ELSE MATTERS ENTER SANDMAN
ENCORE KILLING TIME WHIPLASH SEEK & DESTROY I really liked LoS bar the lyric. It's interesting because Metallica would've never released a song like that in the 80's or 90's. Of course not, you silly sausage. They were totally different people writing totally different songs. Don't be a dummy. Pretty sure LOS lyrics are the closest James got to Kill 'Em All since the 80s. I don't think either are revolutionary, but they're both just fantasy battle lyrics essentially. Agreed.

I listened a bit to a couple of S&M2 songs today. To be honest I haven’t given it much attention since I was at the cinema.
It’s pretty bad I reckon, it’s clear as day that the new arrangements are inferior to the old concert. Also the sound is… I don’t even know how to describe it, not great.
It was quite nice hearing Ktulu and Outlaw, but I would always go for the first S&M though.

Missed opportunity from a song choice perspective and the overall vibe for me is just "get this done so Het can get to rehab"

There's no way Lars is keeping this bright yellow drum set for 8 years.

There's no way Lars is keeping this bright yellow drum set for 8 years. It would be unusual for him to ditch it after the tour cycle as that would be a first... but this whole cycle is so revolved around that colour scheme that it would be weird to keep it. He should go with this kit to get the balls/ovaries fizzing....

It was such a tease when they used that kit for the music videos. Hopefully they’re making recreations of it now.

So it seems that nobody here has talked about the new version of "One" by Apocalyptica, which features Rob on bass and James on vocals? Apocalyptica are set to release a 2nd "Plays Metallica" album in June, and this song is on that album. Pretty cool version, if you ask me. Different, at least. And the video is stunning.

Cant talk about something you are unaware of I realize that, but it seems odd to me that Metallica fans would be unaware of something like this. It's been all over my social media for the last few weeks.

It's been all over my social media for the last few weeks. Really? Honestly, unaware. I did get emails for some whiskey now available in my country (I had a look and bottles look really good but not at $149-300 something) and other emails for a Tshirt club subscription. The last one made me miss their Vinyl club awesomeness. Plan to checkout this new One tonite

Yeah me too, the only reason I knew about it was from one Blabbermouth article. It’s a cool version, they did a similar version (for the first half) at the 30th shows.

I saw it. Watched/listen to it once as a curiosity, but doesn't do much for me if I'm honest. The arrangement is kinda uninspired being just a 1:1 (One for One, heh) recreation, and Het's spoken word thing is...whatever the opposite of subtle is? Overacted...over emphasised, too over the top? I mean it's not bad, but I have no desire to ever listen to it again. One (heh) time was enough,

I listened/watched the One vid twice last night. Agree that the spoken word could have been a little less dramatic but was an interesting take. Was definitely worthy of the bigscreen though

Hey check this out. Fortnite got an update yesterday (fuckyou 1 hour upload 🤬) and I finally loaded in and this cinematic starts playing. It only took 20 years, but it's like we got that Metallica Mad Max car game.

Some sound very much the same and are played on the same notes while some just share a vibe.
