Knowing them they'll do something no one expects. Maybe Candle in the Wind or something.

After Elton's praise for the song, they will probably just play NEM

No one else is hoping for that Lion King song? LoL. Would be different. James is always asking us at shows if we can feel the love tonight.

I'm thinking Rocket Man, it sounds like a tune Metallica would do in one of their acoustic shows.

I was thiinking: Hero of the Day is a good song. They should play it live more often. I'd would have sounded great on S&M.

I wonder if they’ll start to experiment with songs in D standard as they get older. They play all the Load stuff in the original key now, but Hero is so light sounding that tuning down might not sound too bad.
Remember how they randomly played Seek in D for like 10 years?

They should have brought it back for S&M2. It is top 3 from the original S&M.

S&M2 had too many repeats already. What a missed opportunity that was.

S&M2 had too many repeats already. What a missed opportunity that was. 100% I can understand Ktulu, One, NEM & Sand. The first is a familiar way to settle the nerves the latter 3 show staples, but the rest of the repeats were dumb. The best part of the show is the songs that are new. I think there was, though, an element of 'just get through this so James can get help' to it all.

^ Which is a shame in itself. Yup. That whole thing is 'tainted' by that knowledge I think. It's why so many Metalli-nerds put so much emphasis on songs like Outlaw Torn - "oh you can hear how much he's struggling in the way he delivers his vocals" etc

The vibe in the room was a little moody too. S&M2 was my third Metallica show and contrasting with the first two, the whole band seemed very serious the whole show outside of a couple of Lars babble moments (I almost feel like these were added into the show to bring some levity), and when they started loosening up for the greatest hits at the end. I chalked it up to crazy stress and focus, because I have to guess it was their most musically challenging thing they did since learning 80 songs for the 30th anniversary shows.
The news about James gave the vibe huge context after the fact, but it was felt immediately. The guy I sat next to also made a comment during the intermission about how buttoned up they were acting.

That makes sense. There is a bit of that uptightness still in the live shows. I don't want to be 'old man yells at cloud' but there was a sense of looseness in the 90s that has gone now. The show feels more scripted (intro tapes to blame for that) and I think the MASSIVE doughnut stage means that they are kinda disconnected from each other so it seems like a more stilted show. I get it: things change. People change. They're probably more focused on giving the best show they can now than the were in their 20s/30s. But I do miss that vibe some times.
