Can you recommend me some great horror movies that don't have jumpscares or at least not that many? Movies that first and foremost rely on atmosphere?
Movies that I see as examples of what I'm looking for: Rosemary's baby, Alien, The Thing and Misery.

A Tale of Two Sisters. And lately, It Follows (and seemingly The Witch but I haven't seen it yet).

Starry Eyes A Grill Walks Home Alone at Night - not strictly horror, but it has atmosphere.

Apparently, The Witch is really damn good. Though, I haven't seen it yet either. I really need to get on that.

Not a great film, but Event Horizon, despite some shitty dialog and a few not-so-great performances here and there.
There are a few jump-scares, but the atmosphere is there.
EDIT: The film is basically a mix of The Haunting, Solaris and Hellraiser.

I love Event Horizon, I can see past lots of things in a movie if the atmosphere is eerie enough

I love Event Horizon, I can see past lots of things in a movie if the atmosphere is eerie enough The aforementioned problems I have with the film certainly doesn't ruin it for me. The eerie atmosphere combined with the ominous interior design of the Event Horizon is enough to make me look past said problems. I would've loved to have seen the supposed uncut/unrated version, for some of the still-shots look great.

Still remember when I first saw Event Horizon. It was about 1am and I watched it in the dark. It freaked me out a bit. Good film.

Last I heard they found a VHS of it, but it doesn't sound like it'll see the light of day. Bizarrely, according to wikipedia, the cut footage was found in poor condition in a mine.

Such an odd place to send and find such footage. There are some interesting Event Horizon fan-theories on imdb which actually made me look at the film in a different way.

I saw Event Horizon in the theatre when it came out and I swear there was more graphic content. When all those images flash, there was far more disturbing stuff shown and maybe even some subliminal messages that were not on the vhs and any other version I have seen. It frightened me on a deeper subconscious level that at the time I was unaware of. Made my feel "wrong" if that makes sense. All my friends that saw it with me felt the same way and everyone leaving the theatre had this weird sick look on their face. When it was released on home formates it was missing these subliminals Im talking about and lost the extreme wow factor yet was still a great film. Maybe that was the uncut version.

As far as the other films I mentioned, I wouldn't file elements Event Horizon used from said films under "flat out ripped off," but more like "borrowed from." On the Event Horizon IMDB page, someone pointed out that the concept of a ship going to a dimension of pure chaos/evil and bringing back an entity is very similar to a concept used in a game called Warhammer 40,000. That being said, I still love Event Horizon as much as anyone else. EDIT: You might find some of the fan-theories on IMDB interesting, especially the one that involves alien AI.

Would say Sinister, but it does have a handful of jumpscares. Though, the few it has are small potatoes to the overall tone and atmosphere, which is probably some of the best if seen in horror in the past 10 years. I hate jumpscares, but Sinister is awesome. It has a loud noise or two, and two occasions wear the monster jumps at the camera (in 1 scene in the attic and at the very end, if you were wondering.) It's worth checking out, regardless.

Talk about spoilers Ehhh... well, maybe. Though, I was under the impression that the Lightning doesn't like jumpscares, and for good reason because they are cheap, illegitimate 'scares' so I pointed them out, and I don't care about spoiling something cheap and shitty like that.

Yeah, I appreciate it. Haven't read it (yet) though. It's a bit complicated to me, 'cause I kinda wanna know when things happen (if there are a few jumpscares) but at the same time I don't want to risk it if any of that knowledge spoils some important part of a movie (for example how it ends).

In this case, these are jumpscares pointlessly shoehorned into a non-jumpscare horror film, like they producers told the director to add them. I guess because they think that is what horror is, to make people jump in their seat only the 1st time they see the film? And this is from Blumhouse, who I believe are well-known for this. Trust me, it doesn't impact the plot. I could probably cut those jumps out of the movie in windows movie maker and it'd be a better film. Again, not really a spoiler but one of the jumpscares is in the very last shot of the movie, well after the plot raps up. You should be able to see it coming.

I think jump scares are fine, if it's a legitimate jump scare. By that I mean if it's a minster or something jumping out to attack, that's a good jump scare. If it's a loud bang and a fucking cat, it's cheap and stupid.

Yeah I know he doesn't like those and it's fine, but others might read that and find it a spoiler. I would but I have already seen it so no harm done
