Alright, so me and the girl want to travel this summer, and one of the places that's high up our list of countries is New-Zealand.
Any members here (from the few) that are from there, or have been there?
We're coming from Belgium, and our flights alone will be in the €1500 price range, so we were wondering if it's possible to make it very cheap in the country itself. We don't need luxury hotels and 5 course meals, we do like hiking and if possible staying in a tent.
Anyone with any advice will be much appreciated.
Ps, other countries on our list were in the South Americas, but with that one virus, we're considering other options.

Been to Australia for a couple gigs, didn't love it, didn't hate it.
I hear NZ is great though.

I'd rather skip Australia. But NZ is something I'd like to visit one day. The landscapes are phenomenal (or so I think).

I'd like to go, but I think the flight would kill me 6'4" in roach class is a thrombosis magnet, and I aint paying business class prices...
I'll wait for Scram Jets to become a thing.

You are a braver man than me. I flew home from the Maldives via Sri Lanka once and it was horribly long with the stop over

OK my main advice is bring enough entertainment, because the boredom will kill you long before the thrombosis

but you have stops during the 36hours? where? and how long? The only information I have right now are from flight simulations. The cheapest goes to London (25min. flight, transfer time = 7h); from London to Sydney (7,5h flight with technical stop in Singapore, transfer time= 3h); from Sydney to Auckland (5h flight) That's just crazy.

Yeah, we're gonna go to some travel agency this Saturday, and check out all the possibilities. But something tells me we're gonna pick another destination after all.

Never been Down Under (Out of context quote threads here I come)(twice) but I have been to Japan and I HIGHLY recommend it. The crowbarring of thousands of years of culture with the flashy-lights-weird-cartoons of modern times is something to behold.

Ask Gandalf if he can send over those huge eagles.

Ask Gandalf if he can send over those huge eagles. If you had any knowledge about the LoTR universe, you would know that Gandalf, or anyone else, doesn't have any say over the Eagles.

But something tells me we're gonna pick another destination after all. how long were you thinking of staying there? Check out Bhutan, nice scenery and since you like hiking, you can go on a 6 or 7 hours hike (if i remember correctly) to the tiger's nest. plus it would be summer already there, so nice weather.

Two weeks (13 days or something like that), but we're going in July/August, so it'll be winter :p

I've been there for work, only to Wellington and Aukland and some shitty town (Palmerston North) someone recommend I check out on my day off.
Aukland is just another bland CBD, there's nothing there of character, value or interest.
Wellington is nice for a day or two - although it's always really windy. Some great bunkers around the coast. And the airport is cool because the runway is right next to the ocean. Kick back on the grassy area and watch the planes.
Edit: Damn, just saw your update. Canada now? Toronto is pretty cool!

Is it worth spending a lot of money to go to the East Coast? What are your most beautiful National Parks around that area? Are there a lot of cheap places to stay? Such as B&B or even camping grounds, since we're probably gonna rent a car, we can take a tent with us.
We've been looking at some pictures and one thing that's on our mind is that the nature seems to be a lot samey? Is this correct, or is it just a bad view because of bad photographs? We plan on a lot of hiking, so we don't want to get bored after a few days, since we're planning on staying 2 weeks.
Are there some places that you could recommend we NEED to visit? Everyone knows about Niagara Falls and such, but I'm talking about lesser known places.
That's all for now!

Well 6string, if you want an unforgetable hiking trip I would go to the West of Canada, Banff National Parc is about the most beautiful place in the world and you will have an amazing trip, or, go on the otherside of the Rockies to B.C. and check out Whistler or any other small mountain towns, if you go to B.C. you also have Vancouver city if you want to check out the city life and there is the ocean. So a trip to B.C. let's you take in a bit of everything.
Or just come to Montreal and stare at the hottest women on the planet and check out our vast selection of historical churches and stripclubs.
I would avoid the East Coast, not much happening there at all. You can see some whales and a lot of potatoes, that's about it, oh and there is Magnetic Hill which is cool for about five minutes.

Damn, that sucks. The problem is, a plane ticket to Montreal is way cheaper than anything at the West Coast area. We're talking about a 3-400 euros difference PER ticket.

Well you can fly into Montreal and then go to Gatineau National park, its about 1.5 hours from montreal by bus and then you would be 30 minutes away from Ottawa. Lots to see there, was just there last weekend visiting familly. If you want a really cheap ride from Montreal to Ottawa let me know, my wife works for this ride share company where you would basicly pay about 25$ a person rather then about 80$ per person (I don't know what that is in Euros) and you'd get there by car instead of a crowded GreyHound bus.

We were planning on a rental car anyway, so we could get farther and see more places, take more luggage such as a tent, other camping geat and my GF's photography stuff.
Anyway, I think we're more sold on the West side/B.C. idea. We're gonna check with the flight operator what it will cost us for plane tickets to Vancouver. We might want to spend a little more money if it's a sure way for a great and unforgettable trip.
I ain't interested in potatoes!

If you can get the extra cash go for it! West Coast is way more beautiful if your nature type of people. Also check out how much a train from Montreal to the West is, might be cheaper to do that, might not be, I don't know, but its another option. Check out ViaRail.
