I'm finally watching my Live Shit DVD's and a question came to mind. Is there a technical limitation that prevented them from releasing this in 5.1 surround sound, or on bluray in HD with Dolby TrueHD sound?
I'll admit I've become somewhat of an HD snob, and this is pretty painful for me to watch. If Gone with the fucking Wind which was made in 1939 is out in HD and 5.1, why can't this? Was it hastily released? Was it the way it was filmed? I don't even think it's widescreen. Looks stretched.

I assume this is another one of those straight to tape deals. Gone with the Wind was shot on film, this was recorded to tape.

I don't have proof, but I agree with Logan.
Funny how older movies can actually be up-rezed since they were all shot to glorious film, whereas more recent(ish) things don't always have as great source material to work from, so, they actually look older now.
Another reason why proper film is still relevant when shooting

LS was indeed shot on tape (4m30s mark)
That video also confirms that the first Hetfield mullet happened in 1993.
Tape can't be upscaled to HD so the best we're going to get is the current release. Cunning Stunts, however WAS shot on film (hence the HUGE quality difference) so that could come out on bluray at some point.
This preference for tape (cheaper) back in the day means that up until Load, any extra content for the deluxe boxes will most likely be DVD only.

On that note, I'm going to weep myself to sleep.

Nice find on that video. I'll have to check it out.
Always interesting to see that time of the band. The appearance of the ulta-mullet, lars' crazy beard.

The big question is this:
Was Moscow 1991 shot on film? They used huge cameras at that show.
If that show is released on Blu-ray everything is forgotten

If that show is released on Blu-ray everything is forgotten Hmmm there's no noticeable jump in quality in the Year & A Half video (from taped footage on the road to the Moscow footage) which makes me think, tape. But who knows. We shall see. Maybe?

There may have been a coordinated task to film all the bands on that tour on film. Just a guess.

I still use my VCR (I'm a collector - I do what it takes to get my stuff) so it doesn't bother me. HD is more of a bonus for me.

And I know this is no real indicator, but all the footage of the various songs on YT indicate tape to me. And the Donington thing would have been a separate decision, first time headlining etc, AC/DC would have probably wanted no expense spared etc

HD just makes things brighter. I guess darkness is imprisoning me because when I watch the DVDs I didn't even notice anything.

That may be true, but I'm still not really on the HD train. Well trust me, when you do regularly watch something in HD on a good TV you'll never want to go back to "SD" again. I watch all manner of HD streaming, blu-ray, DVD and VHS tape. For me, the videp quality should match the context of the content. Live Shit was shot on tape, so I'll just watch my VHS tapes forever. The Hateful 8 was shot on 70mm film and has giant shots of sprawling frontier landscapes, so I'd get a bluray. A comedy film from 2004, I'll probably just get a DVD. Any horror film I typically watch on VHS because I dislike the clean, clear quality of HD, preferring the gritty feel analog tapes add to the film. I just have to go for the best version of the film or whatever it is regardless of format, because the only thing that really matters to me IS the content and not what looks prettiest on my TV screen. At the end of the day, SD and HD, HDX, 4k, whatever, is all irrelevant.
