I'm surprised the others let him put that shit on the record, imo After The end of the line nothing should surprise you in that regard

It really is a shame. I used to think quite highly of Kirk's solos in the 90's. Lars' drumming too for that matter.
Seeing your favourite band age and their abilities deteriorate isn't all that fun.

Agreed, but they still write good songs and Hetfield's vocals and riffs have always been the primary thing for me. What I don't understand about Kirk is that some of the stuff would sound great if he just held back on the wah, I just don't get it. How can they think it sounds better like that.

This really makes me a little sad to be honest. First of all I'm really bummed that this may be the last Metallica album and there's no Kirk riffs on it. Second, his solos are so much more Lars than him now. I just wish he had more creative control. Who knows, maybe what he was going to do is worse, but I want to hear that instead of these solos Lars basically writes. I'm really holding out hope that there are some great Kirk solos on the album. I don't care man, I love Kirk. What he was saying about wanting to inspire people is so exactly what he is. He is that perfect guitarist, or was, that is so musical and catchy that sounds impressive, but doesn't do crazy unreachably hard things. Hes so inspiring in the way that he truly does make people say "hey I could do that, how about I try?". And he sounds so passionate about music. I still think he has stuff left in him. For example I liked just about every improvised solo he did to Carpe Diem Baby a couple years ago. I really hope something he does on this album wows me. Otherwise I'm going to be a little bummed about Kirk.

Also I love hearing Kirk talk. Hes the most honest person in the band. He will say exactly what he is feeling in that moment, even if it is dead wrong. And he just rambles on about things so passionately. I mean those in the best of ways.

One thing I never read about is Kirk's downpicking. He's as fast as James but doesn't seem to get noticed for that.

It's really not bad to be honest. Yes the last bit goes on too long, but listening to it with headphones and whatnot where you can hear James and Rob underneath him more I think it kind of fits. The first 3/4 is classic Hammett. The last bit is just too much wah, otherwise I think it kind of fits. That type of solo really isn't his wheelhouse anymore, I'm excited to hear his solo on the blusier song if he has one there.
I'm really hoping there're a couple loady/different type songs on the album. I would say most of Load is "uppity". Just not like Mama Said.

Classic Rock website put up a Joe Satriani article the other day where he talks about Kirk as a student. I was surprised that he says he hears the same tonality from Kirks fingers as he had back in the early days. I wouldn't have thought so, particularly after watching some of that early stuff from the KEA/RL boxes.

No writing credits for Kirk it seems on the new album...

Kirk is by far the weakest link in the band. Hearing his new solos made it even more obvious to me.

He is for sure, I still love the guy though. He seems like he still puts his heart and soul into it so who knows what's going on. Not to mention the way Lars makes him play the solos on the album really doesn't help.

I feel he just shows up for the paycheck these days. He's locked into Metallica and knows they're not firing him anytime soon. Half the shows he's to high to care and sounds like a 14 year old YouTuber. The whole riff on the lost phone nonsense is ridiculous, these guys don't sit at home with a computer and make demos at home? That's stupid, so for six years he just hit record on ONE phone and recorded his riffs? Makes no sense. I think he just kept procrastinating and then was called out to show what he had and was all "a shark at my phone then fell into a volcano, sorry guys, do you like my nails?"

Kirk was fantastic with his "One" solo....and I remember how the rock magazines tied him to Joe Satriani back when he was getting lessons from him. After watching SKOM, it seemed a lack of creative hunger and drIve might be an issue. Maybe that carried over to his playing?

I wonder if Dave could've done better...
I never used to think that way but it's the same solo again again.

I'd say he's "average'. He definitely doesn't have the soul or technical ability as someone like Slash. And I know 2-3 guys personally who I'd say are better than Kirk. He had some memorable riffs on the first few albums, but he's definitely lost his edge throughout the years.

I think most of his solos on the new album are fine. His solo on Hardwired was bad but it was kind of an outlier as almost all the others were fairly decent to pretty good. I really like his solos especially on Spit,Dream No More, Moth Into Flame, Now That We're Dead and Am I Savage.
He did better on this album than he did on DM.

Kirk should now quit the band since he has made his views clear about Trump. These are not compatible with him being a competent lead guitarist.

Wow, that was painful to listen to. I wanna see a compilation of Rob messing up, guarantee you that wouldn't be a long video haha.
