They all suffer from massive hearing loss. Kirk also hinted he has arthritis problems, can't remember where I read that though.
I'm one of the few who doesn't like mellow strings and super low action haha.

I have my strings as low as they will go and the guitars all but play themselves. If he's having a stinker I'm not buying the high action to make it challenging. He's not Steve fucking Vai.

True dat, high action has its charm though - strings being further from the pickup allows more dynamics with the picking. Doesn't Mustaine also use 60-14 strings or something stupid?

The saddest part about Kirk's deterioration is that you can tell he still loves playing music and is still passionate about his instrument. Unlike Lars', who doesn't and never really gave a fuck about drums, he just likes/liked being in a band.
I'd say it's solely due to arthritis/health issues, which again is sad to see. I just wish he/the band weren't in denial about it and would drop the multiple solo spots from the live sets and maybe pick the songs Kirk has no issue with. I mean for some reason he can't play in the intro solos to One properly/in time anymore, but always nails the Ride solo for example.

I thin k Lars is almost as good now as he was back in 2003.
Easily the best he's been in a long time.
He's definitely been doing *something* right.

I don't really notice Lars during live shows anymore and that's a good thing. He's not his best but he's doing good enough.

Ah, the old teen guitarist progression of opinion - (6 months playing) "Kirk Hammett's my hero!" | (Two years playing) "Pffft. I can play better than him. I should be in Metallica! *wistfully paws at Paul Gilbert poster* Let me work on my sweep picking for six hours. Then, girls will like me."

Now *that's* metal. Only Iommi should be allowed to use sloppy strings. Else it's like olympic athletes competing in the paralympics.

He must really like that solo so he practices that a lot. That being said, I think its arthritis and he probably doesn't practice that much (at least songs they play). Which is understandable at this point in his life, he's comfortable playing the things he can. He's like Lars in that respect, he scaled down his drums to make it more "challenging" (code word for "my 9-piece drum set up made my arms cramp up), he rescinded practicing rudiments and pushing himself and began to sit back and just play the same fills over and over, and I'm sure there is some health reason as to why he isn't as great anymore. He's not horrible but he's not wonderful either. He's somewhere in between skilled and technical, whatever that may be.

^ or maybe Lars finally understood the role of a drummer in a band, which is to keep a solid tempo. Oh, wait.....

I'm not much of a soloist. I just can't get down the speed of the playing. More of a rhythm player like James. In fact, I just did a cover for the new song Hardwired. Let me know what you think. Any criticism is welcome. I recorded the new Metallica Hardwired song.. Let me know what you think.

The double bassdrum foot shot was the best.

troyg42 I hear ya on the no soloist bit but you still could have made a Kerry King up and down the neck and chances are it would have been better than Kirk's solo :P
