The more music the better I say. Book of Souls wasn't overwhelming. It was a lot to take in, but still a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
How do you cope when two bands you like release new music around the same time? By the sound of it, these two Mastodon CDs will be complete opposites.

The Iron Maiden example of two different bands example?

In My Opinion - Mastodon are on a roll. Every album since Leviathan has been quality.
I'll be disappointed if the next album is not great - but most bands do one lame album.

I'm also curious about what Kimbo's last comment is supposed to mean. I don't really worry about an album being "too long." If they feel like they have enough strong material to fill up a two hour album, go for it, as long as they're not forcing it. If it takes more time to fully process it because of its length and scale, that's fine. That could make the record as a whole even more rewarding.
That said, I've got things I'm looking forward to a lot more than new Mastodon.

MastoYAWN more like for real tho, i feel like i'm really missing out on something here: everything post blood mountain just hasn't connected with me and, 'oblivion' aside, for the life of me i have no idea why they let brann sing so prominently. again, his is a voice i just can't connect with. not a condemnation of them or anything, of course, some things in art are subjective; but i must ask: what is the appeal? what's behind the - not universal but darn near almost - universal praise within rock music fans and the (skewed toward white, male, rock) music press for them? i'm missing something and i'm curious to know, what is it about these most recent records that really nails it?

On the recent records they have nailed how to be catchy without lacking authenticity, they don't sound like other Mainstream metal bands today, bands like Slipknot, Trivium, Machine Head, Disturbed etc, have a gloss, the 'poppy' parts in those bands sound like whiny tween shit to be honest. While the poppy parts of Mastodon are grounded in 70's hard rock, Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple, Rush etc, this melded with other influences, Neurosis, Melvins, Thrash, Classic Metal, Hardcore Punk, Prog Rock etc, just creates a very interesting unique sound.

Agree with this, I wish Brann was kept as a guest vocalist. Nothing against his singing but Brent/Troy's are (among other things) what makes Mastodon so unique. Also if Crack the Skye doesn't connect with you then you are dead inside.

I love all their albums so I don't expect to be dissapointed, even if it's a double album.

It won't be bad but given that the last two mastodon albums were not as appealing to me as the previous ones, I am a bit concerned on the direction they will take.
Baroness' double album dissapointed me a little bit even thought I was very excited at first. I'm givingthem as an example because their style change is a bit similar; less epic though.

I hope it's better than Purple.
At least Audio wise - that made Death Magnetic sound like The Black Album.

What's with people saying that something makes Death Magnetic sound like the black album? That's not even possible.

When something is so bad it makes something equally as bad sound good by comparison.

I really like Purple too, but the opening track does have an overbearing hi-hat that can irritate depending on what system I am listening on.

Some more talk about the album, sounds like Bill is having more of an input on this one. And Brent seems as disconnected from the band as ever. One thing I noticed is that Bill never says the album is a double album, he says "Brent will write a few songs", has anybody in the band apart from Brent said that the next album will be a double album or is it only Brent ? Brent said he has written one album and the band has written another, but I haven't heard anything from the other members acknowledging this. www.blabbermouth.net/news/bill-kelliher-next-mastodon-album-will-be-a-continuation-of-once-more-round-the-sun-but-even-deeper/
