Time Magazine #3 aoty in all genres(Crack The Skye) The Times aoty #1 in all genres (The Hunter) Whoa. While I don't really care much about some big publications "Albums of the Year" list, this is actually really impressive.

Eh, gave it another shot, I don't feel anything when I listen to this band. There is a bunch of playing and singing, but I feel no emotion from it. None of the songs are amazing. Nothing 'for the books.' Just another band. Which is fine, but, I don't feel the 'best band since' and these 'MOP' comments, lol. I mean, the band is ok, and I don't hate the music, but, c'mon. I feel Mastodon's albums usually have a few good tracks on them but that's about it. Their musicianship is great but their albums don't come close to Metallica's classics imo.

Don't get me wrong, i like Mastodon, together with Opeth they are best of the crop of the post 90's bands. Not sure about the comparisons with Metallica though.

Mastodon's first 5 albums = Metallica's first 5 albums.
Mastodon's next album just has to be better than Reload.

Eh, really pointless to compare them to Metallica in any way whatsoever. You like the band? Think they're great? Cool. Sounds like a specific phenomenon between Metallica-Mastodon fans than really making any sense otherwise. I don't compare my favorite bands over the years to Metallica in some kind of need to 'find the next Metallica.' That sounds like some sort of childhood musical attachment issue.

I just think that the progression from Remission to the Hunter is similar in progression from Kill Em All to The Black Album.
Remission / Kill = the aggressive debut
Leviathan / Ride = slightly more melodic and focused
Blood Mtn / Master = even tighter and focused songwriting.
Crack the Skye / AJFA = the "technical" proggy album.
The Hunter / Metallica = Shorter songs with a more commercial sound
Weirdly both Load and Once More... have a muddier sound quality than the preceding album.

first three records are near flawless, imo. all of them very strong 8.5-9/10 ( Leviathan is possibly a 9.5) type releases. since then they've fallen off a cliff, there's been very little/if anything that's really interested me, alas. soz. They're both better than Master of Puppets. Leviathan is for sure! My CtS opinions got me into trouble in the past so I'll stay shhhh. Time Magazine #3 aoty in all genres(Crack The Skye) The Times aoty #1 in all genres (The Hunter) Whoa. While I don't really care much about some big publications "Albums of the Year" list, this is actually really impressive. tbf Mastodon usually feature quite well on most music publications/supplements "Albums of the Year" lists now that they've gentrified metal.

IMO Mastodon haven't done a bad album. I actually cannot decide which album is my favourite as I think they're all stellar.
The Hunter is just amazing though.
I might put Once More at the bottom primarily because the songs don't really breathe as much with that horrible stodgy Raskulinecz production.

I really hope they don't get Raskulinecz to produce again. Elizondo did a much better job on The Hunter.

I'm not comparing them as such. I just like Mastodon music more than Meralluca's music. Deal with it

I'd like to see them get someone like Kurt Ballou or Billy Anderson to produce one of their albums.

Mastodon just announced more gigs in Ireland this August, this will be their 8th and 9th gigs here since 2013, for some of you guys in the States that might not be a big deal, but for a band like Mastodon to come here that often is fucking awesome.

Actually I really like mastodon and they are one of the really good bands that deserve all the recognition they get. But as far as the classics concerned, they are definatley not in the same league. But they come really close. For now. Too bad that they lack a fantastic singer like Hetfield. Hetfield is a game changer. Mastodon, or many other bands for that matter, lack such a powerful singer/frontman.

^ They finally got his guitar right lol. About a year ago he made a post on IG complaining about Gibson/Epiphone, Gibson wouldn't make him a signature series but Epiphone would but when they sent him the prototype it was just a plain black Flying V. Kind of weird Gibson won't make him one though, Bill has like two and they're pretty normal guitars whereas Brent Hinds custom V is pretty unique.

Was there something in the video that made you say that? Or just that he's a bit off the axis?
