Definitely a few notches below OMRTS. Some songs start nice but develop into run-of-the-mill-with-melodic-chorus stuff. Not getting better with more listens. Totally disagree.

The beginning guitars are amazing and bring up so many dark/menacing/sexy possibilities that never really materialise :(

Not particularly into about this album overall. Some good stuff here. Roots Remain and Ancient Kingdom are my personal favorites.

Great album. Not perfect, but pretty consistent. I'm liking their emphasis on big, catchy choruses. They pull them off pretty well, which is good since they're in most of the songs. Roots Remain, Scorpion Breath, and Jaguar God are my favourites right now.

I'd say The Hunter and Once More Round the Sun are better albums. Each to their own though.

Not impressed. Needs more listens. Half the album is mediocre...

I'm not saying which is better, but the production is typical Mastodon and I hate it. So muffled

Yeah, they sound like shit live unfortunately. But their live sound have gotten better over the years.

Yes live it's even worse, which is a damn same because they are amazing musicians. But agree, their sound have improved a lot, so have their stage presence.

I have seen Mastodon a few times and have to agree, they are pretty bad live. Horrible sound and just boring. Troy is fun to watch though.
They are a great studio band.

Is there a consensus why their sound is poor live? Same tech guys from the start? I think they didn't start to be full-on headliners until relatively late so when I heard people complain about their live sound I kinda assumed it was just rushing the sound of earlier bands in favour of headlining acts or something like that.
Are the band not good live in terms of musical performance either?

Are the band not good live in terms of musical performance either? Instrument wise they are doing as expected, which is very well. Vocals are often very poor, especially Brent's. Their sound is atrocious when they are playing as a support band, it's a bit better when it's they own show. The worst thing for me though is how damn boring they are, they are by far the worst live band out of all the bands I really like.

Its a shame because I love bands that are great in the studio and live. Mastodon's studio work is almost perfect, but the one thing that holds me back from calling them one of my "favorites" or one of the "greats" is their live show. Brent always just seems so out of it, and he's what makes Mastodon so good in the studio recordings. When I saw them live he skipped/mumbled half of his parts and it really annoyed me.

I have no problem with the production and I like this album a lot more than The Hunter. Really? I think Black Tongue, Curl of the Burl, Stargasm and Dry Bone Valley are better than pretty much everything on the new album.

Not a fan of the production.
It doesn't sound awful but the mix is not good imo.
The guitars lack presence and the percussion is a bit too loud. It kind of takes away from some really big riffs, especially in the song with Scott Kelly.
I like the album more and more but I feel a couple of the songs on the album would be better with heavier production.
