So many forums. I guess I need to make a thread about Reload's production here too. The floor is yours...

I think Reload sounds good, soundwise, musically it's not a masterpiece but not a total loss.

Not a bad effort. Nothing wrong with the sound.

Yep. . . .
Sure it's not their greatest album but I prefer it to Load and it definitely sounds better than St. Anger.

but in terms of the actual production, what is wrong exactly? Is it even much different to Load? :-S

The drums are from the same sessions. The guitars are all new.

Some guitars are old, some guitars are new. ReLoad's main thing is that it's a lot thicker sounding and more overdriven than Load is, which sounds much more stripped back in comparison. The instrumental tracks are fundamentally the same, but the way it's mixed is different enough where they give off two different vibes. I'd compare ReLoad more to the Black Album, sounding more like a wall of sound versus Load which is clearly two guitars, bass, and drums pretty simply mixed.

I understand your comparison with the wall of sound, but it's not really that either. It's a wall of sound yes but where Black was very much defined, Reload is just a mess. You need a good couple of headphones to be able to pick everything apart

Interesting, i have never noticed Reload being a "wall of sound" or being muddy in terms of instruments blending in. Will give it a spin - been a while anyway.

Thanks Alan.
Reload's production is shit. Well mainly the mix, and all the EQ'ing, and the layering, and the overdubs.
Basically, it's a mess of whiny vocals, 12 guitars playing different things at the same time, and great sounding drums.
They took the studio magic too far, they didn't just use it to record their album, they used it as an instrument.
And here's a new statement for discussion - the band, and Bob Rock, basically agree with me. It's why they wanted a raw, stripped back, warts and all sound for what would become St. Anger.

I never noticed much a difference with Load and ReLoad or at least a significant one where I think one sounds much better than the other. Unless it's something obvious like Death Magnetic it goes right over my head. Think some people just have a better ear for that stuff.

I've always thought that Load's production was a bit more raw and powerful, whereas on Reload they polished it up and made it a bit - I hate to use this word - commercially appealing. I do like the sound of both albums, though. I'm a fan of slick, high-quality, big-sounding production. Perhaps the reason why I love all things Devin Townsend.

I see what you mean, there's maybe 5 guitars during the solo on Prince Charming.

Pretty sure he never got banned.
I was just listening to Reload today. I still think it sounds pretty good. I think Fixxxer might have a little too much going on at times but other than that I didn't really have a problem with all the multitracks.

Interesting, i have never noticed Reload being a "wall of sound" or being muddy in terms of instruments blending in. Will give it a spin - been a while anyway. Oh it certainly isn't a GOOD wall of sound, but it's certainly more that than what Load is; two clear guitars, a bass, and drums. Another issue with ReLoad is that some of Kirk's rhythm tracks nearly sound like he's trying to sightread tabs James wrote for him, as his and James' rhythms don't come close to sounding coherent together on a few songs.

I listened to it yesterday, if you don't really pay too much attention it sounds okay. But when you really listen for the details, it's sounds pretty horrible. You can't make anything out in certain songs. Load just sounds perfect

I've no problem with Reload's sound.
I have a problem with albums by punk bands that sound like they were recorded onto a cassette 4-track in someones garage.
