Metallica has always been renowned for their huge guitar sound. The band reworked their tone around 2008 for the worse especially in the studio (DM, LOS). Although their live tone is pretty good lots of songs miss the huge crunch. How can James think that less gain is better?
Comparison (St. Anger 2003 VS St. Anger 2014):
2003 (Intro, main riff):
2014 (Intro, main riff):
Huge difference. The 2014 is almost like a parody version. Sounds completely shit. I was laughing when they were playing it (I love the song and its good to have new versions of it but what the hell).
So whats the purpose of this thread? - Whats your favourite live era for guitar sound? (with videos and comments) - Give comparisons

I generally would get your concerns, but why did you, in this case, show us, that their current tone is way better? It's not even close to being (and I quote: "completely shit") and certainly not(and I quote: "like a parody version). Are your ears "some kind of a parody"? (see what I did there?) I mean, are you a raging "MORE GAIN" Line6 Spider IV, 13-year old metal kid? Well, enough of that, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I am just not sharing your opinion in the slightest sense of musicianship.
I won't compare anything, because there isn't 1 guitar tone, that does everything equally good, but I will post my favourite guitar tone (record-wise and live-wise).
Record (Distorted)
Live (Distorted)
Record (Clean)
Live (Clean)
Now me explaining: I like this distinct and unmistakeable, harmony rich and woofy, yet crushing, fat chuggy sound, paired with this atmospheric and bone chilling clean tone, INSTANT 80's feelz. For live tones, I want something more ... classic rock-ish and dynamic, where you need to "get your shit done" or else it will sound like balls. This tone still seems to make a LOT of fun to play with and then there's this awesome clean tone, like it comes straight from outer space, far far away, this huge, chimey and moody tone of godness (especially epic in Fade, One and K2lu). If I had the possibility to combine the record tones as 1 preset and the live tones as a 2nd preset, I would be SO happy.

The guitar(s) in the first video sound significantly better than in the second but good god Jimmy H sounds dreadful in the chorus. Would not recommend a part-time job in a hardcore band for him.

How can James think that less gain is better? Because it is. Depends on the context.

You know, it's funny. Lately I've been turning the mid boost on my amp off. It's not as "heavy", per se, but it makes the guitar sound....I dunno....a little more...alive, and less compressed.
So the tone I've been using as of late (to my ears) actually does sound quite a bit like Metallica's current live tone.

There was this time, where I worked at Session as a practical trainee, and there was this apprentice, who played guitar in his spare time on this little Yamaha Modeling amp. When he had his lunch break, I took a guitar and jammed a little bit (as I am used to from the "...And Justice for All" album) with a lot of gain. Then he came back and he just said "Who turned up the gain THAT much?" and I didn't say anything, but he then turned the gain down to where it was half (doesn't say much, but I had it full, prior to that). And when he started playing, I realized, his sound was so much much heavy than mine. I mean, sure, my tone had more of the harmony rich quality of the Justice album, but his tone, made him chugg so precisely and it was just unbelievable. On that day, I learned two things. 1) The tone is in your fingers and 2) the lesser the gain, the more the tone (of you) comes through, that is just a fact. I personally like playing with a lot of gain, when I am in for this harmony playing thing, but when I want to work on my playing skills, I drop the gain and play precisely, it helps, when there isn't a ton of gain, covering all your mistakes in one big fat "ZSWOOOOOOOOOOSH"

While Metallica's current live tone have been better, I still gotta say that it's pretty damn massive and good (James) when you are actually at the gig. I also feel like it represents that band a little better these days than the say the black album tone would have. It's a lot fuller and thicker, probably a lot "rockier" than metal, where as I thought it could get a little thin and winy earlier on.. Also his clean tone was absolutely horrid back then. But of course You Tube vids makes makes everything a lot worse. I still remember my first show after James had gotten his new pickups installed, everybody was going on about how thin his tone had become bla bla. so I was really paying attention. It might have been Orion 2012 ?!? Anyways, I was blown away, MASSIVE tone right there. I wouldn't mind jamming on that setup.

the monster guitar tone isn't all James, it's him and Flemming. It's possible to get close without a Mesa or a ESP though.

One of the best parts of seeing Metallica live is right before they go one and James guitar tech starts messing around at volume 6 and everyone goes nuts... And then he raises they volume to 11 and everyone goes fucking nuts.

That's awesome yeah, but I'm more of a fan of Flemming testing the kick drum. Dat kick to the chest is godly
