54 Question Music Survey

I started doing this, but a lot of these questions are just really stupid and pointless so I didn't bother finishing. Maybe if it were shorter and cut out a lot of the stupid bullshit I'd care more.

This could be fun + I'm slightly buzzing just now so why not!

1. What are you listening to now? I am watching the Colorado Rapids/LA Galaxy match just not because it's really nice that you guys are finally embracing it. There's some lad with a tin of Budweiser exactly like the one I'm drinking and I'm envious that he can take beer to the football like that.

2. What song(s) make you sad? Elliott Smith's You Make It Seem Like Nothing fucking kills me, mostly because of it's #relatability ("...I didn't know about, I didn't figure it out. It's starting to come to me a little bit too late." tears, man. there's a lot of pathos here and a lot of sadness and how you want to be there for someone but you can't because you don't know how to and by the time you do there's nothing you can do). Art Garfunkel's Bright Eyes also because if you've ever seen Watership Down or just have a soul good God you'll know, "how can a life that burns so brightly suddenly burn so pale?" ( ).

3. What is the most annoying song in the world? That "Somebody to Lean On" song by Major Lazor, MØ etc because I saw some youtube nerd cover it with an acoustic song and did the weird electronic chorus bit with their throat and nope.

4. All time favorite band? Probs The Smiths, eh. Refused, Orchid, The Replacements and Pavement are amongst the numerous runners up.

5. Newly discovered band? Wodensthrone are quite a good band I recently found. Seemingly they split up very recently, of course. Another is Vuota. Both place themselves at the distinctively "not-kvlt" side of the black metal spectrum. Wodensthrone are one of those dead atmospheric groups, very similar to Saor! Vuota remind of Lifelover if all of their members were replaced by a drum machine. There's a super strong synthpop element to their music. That song I linked doesn't really demonstrate much of their BM or avant-garde, Fantomas-esque, tendencies too much but it's my favourite track of theirs. It is the sound of velvet, heavy incense, hairspray and crucifix necklaces and I love it.

9. What do you listen to hype you up? I'm too much of a slacker to be hyped by much but heavy synthy techno and very rhythmic noise rock is good. Though, Speedway by Morrissey (in the link) is going to be wrestling entrance theme for sure.

11. Last gig/concert you went to? HEALTH/Apostille back in October because I'm auld and don't go to shows often. I was meant to be seeing Grimes today though but that didn't happen.

12. Band you find yourself listening to the most now? The past week has been of complete devotion to Orchid, !!! and Whiskeytown which is something of a mix but eh.

13. Most hated band? Fucking Foo Fighters (tho tbh it's mostly my Grohl hate coming through. 'All My Life' and 'Breakout' are fucking atrocious though)

14. Song that makes you think? (Professor Frink, Professor Frink, he makes you laugh he makes you think!) Spectra Sonic Sound by Nation of Ulysses because we need to eliminate fascism once and for all. (glayvin)

15. Band you think the world should love as much as you do? Deafheaven are going to save us.

16. Coolest music video? Flash Delirium by MGMT because it offends friends with conservative aesthetics; Little Baby Nothing because women are every bit as important as men and for political propaganda purposes; Keep the Streets Empty for Me by Fever Ray because it stuck with me and I found it haunting, which perfectly matches the vibe of the song. I've probably forgotten some really great subversive stuff but aye.

17. Music video with the most babe watch? I don't know what this means. Here's a clip from a popular Saturday morning children's tv show from when I was 9-10 where they make babys race, for some reason.

18. What do you play in the bedroom to spice things up? BASS VIBES. This is pure sex sounds tho.

19. Can you play an instrument? playing tha' bass half my life, not that you could tell. I play noise guitar and hit synths sometimes.

21. Are you in a band? In a countryish drone type deal with a pal but we keep it to his bedroom.

22. Ever dated a musician? Oui.

23. Do you wish that you were a musician? I'm a renaissance man and a polymath!

24. Best chick band you know of? Problematic af there. Vivian Girls are heroes; Nisennenmondai bring the noise and anxiety; Savages make most death metal look even more pathetic and the best live act I've ever seen; ZZZs lie between all three and are fucking brilliant.

25. Last song you heard on the radio/CD, etc. Last CD, umm, I think the last CD I played was Van Dyke Parks' Song Cycle so it'd be 'The Eagle and me', probs. As for the radio it was Put Him Out by Ms Dynamite, idk how I remember that + I haven't heard that song in like 10 years, what a cracker it is.

26. What do you think of classical music? If you're so good then how come you're dead? (naw, big up to my Baroque peeps)

27. What do you think of country? Fantastic.

28. What do you think of death metal? Fuck off.

29. Last BIG band you saw live? HEALTH are from America so that's something and their bass player is a pretty tall dude. I'm not sure what constitutes 'big', tbh. I saw Green Day in 2010. They're pretty massive.

30. Are you a groupie? I am pure.

31. Do you listen to music in foreign languages? I'm cool too. My taste in music is horribly anglo and white male-centric so I really ought to do something about that.

32. What famous musician would you like to "spend the night" with? I would go to dinner with Juan Alderete de la Peña, letting him pick the place of course because his instagram suggests that he kens, and if he invited me back to look at some of those sweet, sweet effects pedals...I wouldn't say no.

33. Worst concert moment? Most local indie and metalcore band sets I've endured with a warm pint of Kronenberg.

35. Sad concert moment? Nothing specifically related to the concert or show I've been at.

36. Best local act you can think of? Bon Scott was born in the town I live in; half of Idlewild grew up around here; Brian Molko of Placebo spent his teenhood in Dundee and still visits semi-regularly. Average White Band are from Dundee and probably the all time best; The Mirror Trap are best around just now - Brian Molko is a big fan and this a clip from when they supported Placebo in Russia!; Michael Marra was a terrific folk singer (you can learn some local geography here too) and Jimmy Deuchar is Dundee's Modernist hero.

37. If you were a musical instrument, what would you be? Güiro.

38. Do you listen to the radio? It's what I have on practically all day.

39. Do you follow music charts (Top 40, etc)? Nae really, naw.

40. Do you watch music TV? Someone usually has a music channel on when pre-drinking eh.

41. Have you met any famous musicians? I met Frank Turner once. I shared a bottle and spilled wine all over a white shirt with my guitar hero (Rod from Idlewild) as an excitable 17 year old.

42. Are any of your friends/family musicians? Quite a few of them.

43. Song that best describes your feeling right now? I'm going to post 'These Days' again but this time I'll post St Vincent's version because it's so haunting and her voice is beautiful here. (Jackson Browne, the fella who wrote the song, also has a terrific version. I think it's actually my favourite song ever.)

44. Song that describes your life? I can't fucking post 'These Days' again can I? Instead rnnnnnn Cloud Nothing's Fugazi-having-a-band-battle-with-Tortoise-or-Mogwai-when-they-were-still-fucking-decent-sounding Wasted Days and Valentine by The Get Up Kids because feeling allllllll of the angst just now. #postrecession

45. Do you know the names of all the band members you listen to? Lord no.

46. Does a musician's physical attractiveness play a role in the music you listen to? Well I listen to Metallica don't I?

47. What famous musician would you like to marry? A generous and loving one who could provide economic stability, fulfilling intimate relations and allow me and inspire me to fully actualise.

48. Favorite movie soundtrack? Adventureland's explosion of 80s indie, David Bowie and Lou Reed is my life. I feel I should pick one of those made for the film ones but my mind is blank. Lost Highway has a good soundtrack iirc. 

49. Any musician pet hates? Idek.

50. What do your parents listen to? Mither is big into 80s pop and indie and Metallica so those are good.

51. What are you listening to right NOW? Crowded House's Don't Dream It's Over just came on that! It also features prominently in Adventureland as well as being one of those '80s pop/indie songs I as exposed to as a youngster.

52. Do you wear band t-shirts? I have a few but I tend not to wear them outdoors or as outer shirts or w/e. Except my S.C.U.M shirt which looks cool as heck and I wear it a lot whenever we have summer here, y'know?

53. Do you cook to music? Naturally.

54. Do you sing on the toilet? Only theorise about society and our impending doom.
