I recently listened to all of Beyond Magnetic. It's mostly scrappy. None of the songs deserve to be on the main album in their current form. Hell and back is especially ropey. Just a collection of parts. James sounds like he's desperately trying to make the song work. Yea I found BM in the $5.00 CD bin at walmart a couple years ago. I bought it for the hell of it I guess. It's collecting dust somewhere now. Blah.........lol

I swear to god i dialed in the shittiest distortion setting on my Line 6 Spider III and it sounded exactly like the LOS tone.

Cool song. The only thing I'd say is that it sounded like it could have been on Beyond Magnetic. Makes me fear the next album will just be DM Pt.II, just close to a decade later. There was a time when a decade made Metallica almost unrecognizable.

There was a time when a decade made Metallica almost unrecognizable. Yep, master to Load... Shocking when you put it like that.... Welcome btw And now that I think of it, even 5 years could do crazy things to Metallica's image in the 90s. But still, it would be nice to think that there'd be some really tangible deviation from DM's sound on this next record. If I wanted to listen to a metal band put out the same record time after time, I'd listen to Slayer (cue disagreement on that in 3,2,1...). I think what it is is that Metallica's growth as people and their growth as musicians used to be intertwined, but this diverged when they became more ardent family men in the 2000s. Then, their need to experiment was probably diminished as they found fulfillment in other places, and you can't really knock a person for getting their personal life together and laying off focusing on their professional life, especially if that's secure. I suppose this is really more James narrative moreso than the other guys' but him being the main creative force it still seems to fit how the band now progress. And thanks.
