It might have been great with garage inc guitar tone. Instead they used telecasters into a roland cube by the sound of it.

I've been experimenting with different guitar tones and the thinner sounds they've been using definitely give the riffs more definition. Still love that layered thick guitar tone off the TBA though.

My opinion is somewhere between "Not bad for a demo" and "Horrible song belongs on Lulu". It's worse than "not bad", but better than "horrible".

Listened to it again today, still horrible, not one redeeming quality to this song. It's rehashed riffs with thin guitar tone and horrible drumming. Vocals are crap too. Still in my bottom 5 Metallica songs, maybe even bottom 3. It's on par with We did it again, Poor Twisted Me and Little Dog

The good: - the intro - the main riff - the verses - the interlude- the solo section- the vocals on the first Garage Demo The bad: - the slow chorus - the repetition - the entire post-solo section - a lot of the lyics - the title - the guitar tone - the vocals on the First Pass demo This.

^ The intro sucks though Kimbo. I kinda like it actually, imagine it with full on powerful drums and a big fat heavy tone. Would sound awesome

No they are still a little too winy, it sounds like he is really pushing it, and not in a good way. Albeit the worst thing is probably the melody. I really like these lines though: "Are you remembering the sound" "Recall the shaking of the ground" The way he pronounces ground is classic Hetfield too It's just really hard to appreciate anything vocal wise when they are on top of a turd like that.

I think it's ok for a demo, ok for a fun summer festival song, but certainly not album worthy in its current state...whatever that is. Seventh pass?

I voted "Not bad for a demo" because there wasn't a "Not much good, even for a demo" option.

Hell and Back is far worse then LOS IMO. The only thing good about Hell and Back is the ''When the sun goes...'' Bit, the rest of the song, everything that is distorted, sucks ass.
I can listen to LOS any old time, where a song like Hit the Lights I just want to kill. I know, the first song they wrote against the last song they wrote isn't fair, but still, I hate hit the lights... and Devils Dance.

You must be trippin', the riff at around 4.15 is like 50000x better than all of LOS combined And Devils Dance rocks

I recently listened to all of Beyond Magnetic.
It's mostly scrappy. None of the songs deserve to be on the main album in their current form.
Hell and back is especially ropey. Just a collection of parts. James sounds like he's desperately trying to make the song work.

I think all of them could have been worked into good/great/awesome songs, there's some bad transitions in all of them + unnecessary parts. I would say Hate Train is the closest to a coherent song but bullet had potential to crack right into their top 5. Hell and back is by far the weakest and that was the one they choose to play live Rebel is a mess but has lots of cool moments sprinkled throughout it
