I like it a lot.
For me its one of the better projects that Metallica have done (bar their own releases) and glad they did it. Its not always comfortable to listen to, but I like that it does that. The one song I would drop is probably one that others "tolerate" and thats Iced Honey because it feels too nice for this album (and Metallica)
Live version of Dragon is kick arse

Metallica should have locked Lulu in Lars's vault and never let it out. It was a joke of an album, so fucking bad. A band as good as Metallica didn't need this collaboration.

A band as good as Metallica didn't need this collaboration. 100% correct. They didn't need this collaboration. They wanted to do and had the financial and artistic freedom to do it. Was it for everyone? No. Was it meant to be? No. They did it for them and decided to let others hear it. Kudos to them for taking a (genuine) risk at that point in their career.

If Swans had the musical talent of ICP, and were fronted by Fred Durst recovering from a stroke, Lulu is what a Swans album might sound like.
It's fucking catmelodeon.

You won't see Slayer doing a risky album. The biggest risk Slayer will ever take is doing a song which is 230 BPM and not 240 BPM in case they get accused of recording a ballad.

Everyone has their own likes and dislikes, that's cool, that's what makes us different. I like lulu, its what I expected when they anounced the project. It could have been tightend up, and a little more thought out. But in the spirit of Lou, that's what he wanted, a kind of improved no bellydancing pulsing kind of thing. If they had just recorded and released it quietly, rather then marketing it like it was the next best thing ever with 500$ deluxe box sets and such, then I don't think there would be so much backlash. Oh, and James looks so cool in the video for The View, I love that look.
If any of you had a chance to work with James on an album, but the result was great in your head, but everyone else laughed at it, would you really care?

I don't criticise them for doing the album, I just think the end result is shite.

I hope that the negative reaction wouldn't discourage them from participating in further, more out-there, projects because there is certainly potential on Lulu. I doubt it will but I hope it doesn't. I want more off-beat out-there Metallica collabs! (and that version of 'Dragon" is great)

Hey Mastodude, could we not turn this into another thread where we argue with HR about whether or not Slayer is good? We get it, you like Mastodon and don't like Slayer. You're not changing anyone's mind about anything, least of all HR. Anyway, if you want some fairly well conceived thoughts on this album, I'd recommend this review personally. It's a different perspective that what most people here have but it's definitely valid. Lou Reed fucking sucks... He made a fortune out of talking. Hm, Lou Reed's definitely not for everybody, but you're talking out of your ass right here. He made a fortune out of writing great music that many people like. It's nowhere near as unlistenable as Metal Machine Music. I enjoy MMM more overall. And as for St. Anger, it is a fantastic record, and with better drum sound and a bit tighter arrangements it would be a Top 3 Metallica album. Perhaps, but as it is it's a bottom 1 Metallica album.

There was definitely comments made that there could be another project with Lou. For me, its a shame not to see what they might have done next together. Lou chose some great players for his projects, and he was clearly pleased with what Metallica did for his work. I used the best band on the planet, is what I recall him saying.

There is a really cool piece in an Issue of So What that talks about Metallica first meeting Lou and how Lars had to be the bridge of peace between Lou and James since they both have very ''Iconic'' personalities. Basicly, Lou was a super asshole at first when they met up to rehearse Sweet Jane and James got very ''Fuck you'' with him. By the end of the jam, they were super tight and Lou was like ''Hey, let's make an album'' and Metallica were like ''Sure'' to be polite but thinking it would never happen. Oh, and Lou thretend to beat up Lars using his Kung Fu moves and was serious about it. I think Metallica were a bit scared of Lou and just kind of went with it fearing for their safety if they turned him down. He seemed like a bit of a nut job, but in an awesome kind of way.

...how bad is it? I have this serious morbid curiosity about it and I really want to hear it. I know it's supposedbly the worst thing to ever grace the earth but I...I just have to. It's tempting me. Please tell me if it's really that bad. Not to be a dick or nothing but.... .....just listen to it. Why would you care what we think? Art is subjective. If I hate it, you might like it. So there's no real point canvassing for opinion because the ONLY one that matters is yours! Just don't expect Death Magnetic 2. This is a completely separate and different beast. A collaboration. The reason I made this thread is kind of to know what to expect going in and not from "tr00" metalheads

I listened to this album today. And well, I don't even know what to say. It was good, but horrible at the same time. Honestly, the album seems to vary in quality track to track but I'd say for the most part Disc 1 is pretty good, while for the most part Disc 2 is pretty bad.
Brandenburg Gate is a horrible song, with really bad lyrics (I'm happy with my nappy) and Hetfield's "SMALL TOWN GURL" is really just horrible. There is nothing redeeming about this song. Thankfully, The View is pretty ok, with a good riff and some of Reed's best vocal performance on the album, which isn't saying anything but they fit the song pretty well. Best part is when Hetfield's angry vocals come in. Pumping Blood is even better, getting inside the head of an insane person is what it sounds like. The riff is awesome too.
Mistress Dread is the best song here, with an AWESOME riff and frantic energy. It really fits well with the "inside an insane person" feeling Pumping Blood gives. This violent riff is suited well with Lou's vocals which make the insanity more real. An awesome song. Iced Honey is a kind of stereotypical radio rocker, but there's nothing necessarily wrong with it. Cheat On Me does drag for too long (there intro lasts for 3 minutes before the actual song starts!) but I love how it builds up. Not a bad song. Now, that disc was good, I liked it, Brandenburg Gate is awful, but the rest of the disc isn't bad.
I wish I could say the same for disc two though. Frustration has a nice riff, but it makes up about 1/6 of the song and the rest is just more rambling from Lou, with no background music AT ALL. The lyrics here are pretty messed up "SPERMLESS...LIKE A GIRL" and the song itself is nearing a train wreck. It's not quite bad, but I don't think I'd ever listen to it in it's entirety again. Maybe once or twice, but that's probably it for maybe the next 3 years. Little Dog sucks even more, having Lou's musicless ramblings consume the entire song. I really kind of drifted off into space, not even thinking about anything at all during this song. I could've listened to The Judas Kiss or some other 8 minute song and that would've been better.
Dragon is okay but it's got some pretty...I don't even know...lyrics. It's a little underwhelming for it's long runtime though. Still, disc 1 quality song. The only really good track on this disc. But everything bad the album's done so far is nothing compared to the grand climax of...JUNIOR DAD! Quite possibly one of the worst songs I've heard in my life, this song spends the first 10 minutes being a boring bland crap like Little Dog, then the rest of the song is nothing. Absolutely nothing. Just some strings playing the same 2 notes with nothing else going on. That's it. Never have I checked how much time is left in the song this many times since I don't know. This song is an absolute train wreck, and every bit of hate the album gets this song deserves (Well, not ALL of it, I do not condone the guy who wished to kill Lou Reed for this album).
Nevertheless, this is one heck of a mixed album, but as it stands, it's not the musical equivalent of Satan. It was definitely like nothing I've heard before, that's for sure. Anyway that's my review of the album.

Should find some reviews of the album from Lou Reed fans. James is referred to as the Shouting Man (rofl)

I generally enjoy this album apart from Mistress Dread. The vocals just don't go AT ALL on that one.
I fuckin LOVE The View and I did from the 30 second preview. It gave me goosebumps because it was so damn creepy.
Iced Honey is pretty cool in a Sweet Jane kinda way.
I'm not hugely keen on Cheat on Me or Little Dog but they're ok.
But the massive riffs for Frustration and Dragon and Stellar.
Junior Dad is nice but that 10 minute outro alone made this a double album. Cut that and it's a single disc.
