www.patreon.com/neobliviscarisInteresting project, this. Their ultimate goal is to gain a monthly Australian minimum wage (per member), being almost halfway to their first target after just a few days. The lengthy introduction also addresses financial details of their ongoing world tour, which is an insightful read. The 5$ reward seems worth the price. It's a monthly fee and you can apparently drop off at any point you like.

Sounds like they need to get jobs tbh. Their drummer recently quit his job and all but one member were let go from their jobs because of the band's touring schedules. The idea of the campaign is to allow them to make enough money to sustain themselves while still being able to run the band full time as opposed to doing it as a hobby. The demand for them to tour and play is there, but they're losing money with each tour. I'm a big fan of the band, I wouldn't mind paying a couple bucks a month to help support them.

Interesting read, that. -5 points for Gryffindor for the extremely goofy NeObluminati thing, though

Not only did Dan Presland (drummer) quit his job, it was a very well paying job (6 figures) so further proof the demands to tour were just too much. I donated to their last campaign so I got this email before it went public but I'm not sure if I'll donate again. I'll see.
I am seeing them tonight (so excited) so I'll buy some merch or something from them.

Sounds like they need to get jobs tbh. It really ends up being what every musician or band is comfortable with, or what their ambitions are. Not that uncommon to read interviews once in a while where people from bands claim that holding down jobs is much easier for them because they're not dependant on the record labels and don't have to be under pressure from them and compromise artistically, from instance. Last I read like that was with the frontman of Immolation. Of course you can't never really know if he's just putting a positive spin on things and would like to tour more, for example, or if he is really ok with it.

Maybe you just worded it poorly ;) I wonder how big their share is on the merch sales on current tour... I'm sure they'd answer that when asked.

Was just talking about this a couple of days ago. Honestly, I think it's pretty naive for a band like Ne Obliviscaris to think they can make the band a full time job and earn a profit. Especially when bands who are many times more well-known are having to hold down jobs.
I'm not really sympathetic towards it. Sure, we'd all love to be able to do it, but it just seems... Silly? But hey, if people are happy to support them then all the more power to them.

Oh I know you get something, but the perks didn't really interest me like their first campaign. Their first campaign wasn't a donation either (I got a handwritten "forget Not" lyric sheet).

I don't have a horse riding in this but it seems silly to say that the economic situation has changed "from what it once was"* and they can no longer afford to devote all of their time to their (niche) art form: artists being poor is a phenomenon verging on cliché. Obviously I wish them all the best and ultimately think that we should all be able to dedicate as of our time to creative pursuits as possible but I'm not sure that has ever been a reality. *I mean, obviously it has since the late 1980s, but niche artists still had to work to fund travelling around the world performing (or have a big label behind them). -5 points for Gryffindor for the extremely goofy NeObluminati thing, though

A statement from Tim Charles' (Violin/Clean Vox in NeO) personal FB page. It's long, but I though it was a good read.

Saw them last night. Holy shit they're amazing live.
They only played 3 songs ("Devour Me, Colossus", "Pyrrhic" and "And Plague Flowered the Kaleidoscope") so it ended up being more time to get to and form the venue than they were actually playing, and I went for them and them only so once they left the stage I left but it was worth it. I stayed after and met half of them and got 'em to sign my The Aurora Veil LP.
It ended up being more than a dollar a minute if I work out ticket cost and parking, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
