I stated reading S. king and some other guys "Black House" which is a sequel to "The Talisman". The first ten pages where torture to the brain, but then it started to pick up with some mentions of the Crimson Kind and the Dark Tower... And lots of child murders. So far so good.

I tried to read Black House a looooooong time ago....couldn't get through it. I think I was still in High School then so I may not have had the patience for it back then. If you get through it....let me know if it's worth giving it another shot again!

I read The Talisman not so long ago. I quite enjoyed it although I could definitely tell which parts were written by King. The sequel is on my list. But first I am re-reading The Passage books by Justin Cronin. Loved them the first time around and with the third book recently published, I'm all in!

I know everyone loves it, but I tried reading it and find the writing style way too frustrating to read so I gave up. No doubt I will try again in the future, but I found myself spending more time re-reading sentences/paragraphs trying to make sense of what was written instead of getting absorbed into the story. I need correct grammar! I felt the same for the first 20 pages or so but then it didn't phase me anymore. I get what you mean though, sometimes the writing style of a book can throw me off as well. But do read it, its so good. I checked out the trailer for the film and looks alright, I think I'll skip it though, I feel it might ruin the magic that the book had on me. I just read the book and loved it, though I can understand why some might find it hard to read. The movie is very faithful to the book and I think it nails it, the Man and the Boy were perfect casting. Great acting and a disturbing vibe to it.

I went to the library and got two books that I want to finish by the end of the year. The first one is called The Bell Jar and the second one is called Outlander. I know nothing about them, I'm going into each book blind but I've heard they're both supposed to be pretty good.

Just finished Jurassic Park now I've started a book called Sapiens, about the history of the human race. It's still way too early to make a definite call on it's quality, but I have to say it's been brilliant so far.

Perfume - The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind (Read by Sean Barrett)
I've seen the movie and know most of the book, but I picked up the audiobook based on rave reviews about Barrett's readings. It's awesome.

Why aren't you reading part 2 the Lost World? The movie was a piece of shit but the book is really great.

I'm contemplating a reread of the Magician trilogy The books by Lev Grossman? Did you ever complete the re-read? If so, thoughts? And what about the TV adaptation??

I'm contemplating a reread of the Magician trilogy The books by Lev Grossman? Did you ever complete the re-read? If so, thoughts? And what about the TV adaptation?? I read the first two. I remember enjoying them but that was like ten years ago, so I don't know how I'd feel now. From what I remember, the main character is a frustrating character. That can be good or bad depending on the reader. I tend to enjoy reading people that I don't like. I also never finished the TV adaptation lol though I thought they had done a good job with it. It was very dark at times while containing some snark and whimsy at other times. In that way it felt faithful to the books, but story beats were quite faithful as well. In fact, if I were re-read or re-watch I'd probably choose the show over the books.
In a general response to this thread, I'd like to recommend a couple of books by Guy Gavriel Kay. Both are standalones that take place within a larger "universe" he's created. The first book is Tigana. It takes place in a fictional country that is based on Renaissance Italy. It's typical in his books that the setting is completely fictional but heavily based on locations and cultures from our world. Tigana is a story about imperialism and loss of identity.
My other suggestion is The Lions of Al-Rassan. This one is set in a country based on Moorish Spain.

I got a copy of Contact laying around that I borrowed off my mom, the one that Alien Jody Foster movie is based on. I haven't read a novel in a few years. I used to burn through books in no time prePandemic, but haven't picked one up since then. No time, kids up in my face 24/7 etc. Even now, it is calling me, but my list of things to do overrides my attention span. I can't even remember the last book I read.

I picked up a Kindle last year, something I was always against because I loved building my own book collection. But I'm completely hooked...have read about 9-10 novels in the last 6 months. Grabbed a real book from my backlog a couple of days ago, the first book in the Death series by Terry Pratchett that I've been meaning to read. A few pages in then the more cheap crime thrillers on the Kindle started calling me....I'm addicted. Sorry Terry.
