I wish I could hear Puppets for the first time again. I remember the day I did though, it was recess, I was in Grade 5 and I was just getting into Metallica. The only thing I clearly remember from those moments was being shocked by the ''Pianoish'' first notes of Sanitarium.
If you heard the album today for the first time, or it came out today, do you think it would still be all that?

I only heard MOP in full about a month ago, so it is as fresh as it will ever be despite listening to it every second in that month :)

You kids and your silly downloading, see what you were missing out on! I just find that so bizzare, like meeting someone who has never heard Stairway to Heaven or Paranoid, just weird.

I believe this means they played it a little slower and sped up the tape. To make it tighter. So they had to tune down a little so it would be in tune with tape sped up. The song is at a tricky down picking speed, and is just sloppy to play. I'm sure this info might ruin the illusion for some people.

Lars said in the Black Album Classic Albums that back then they would record the first verse over and over and then the chorus over and over and then verse 2 etc etc.
That meant they concentrated on getting each section perfect before moving on. Not like recording the whole song through 50 times.

Not like recording the whole song through 50 times. Well, no one does that.

Have you picked up a guitar yet? If you have not, do so, it will change you and your whole outlook.

I first heard MOP in 86 when my friend bought the cassette. We never heard of Metallica before, just saw this cover and so we used to buy albums (he was a tape guy and I bought the records) and copy each others stuff. I was already playing guitar and so when I put this tape on I couldnt really understand how they were doing this riff (which was Battery). This song went on and on, lots of changes and solos and I loved it. It took a moment to realise I'd just listened to 2 tracks, not one. No displays or track numbers back then and all I heard was the E chord stop and then another one, which I initially thought was just another change in the song, not the MOP intro riff. Setlists with Battery following MOP always shit me because of that, it just flows in the correct order. Before this Metallica album, we were all about Iron Maiden back then, typical 80s stuff and Metallica took everything up a notch with what they were doing, it was definitely noticeable back then. Ill add this because I;m just recalling this time and thinking No skip buttons No display No tabs to play to.....

heck, you're young! (then again i was not long 14 when i started posting on the old 'bb - oh god i'm 22 now, i've spent over 1/3rd of my life with these people) i was 13 also when i first heard master of puppets. it really did affect me. by then i'd already heard a lot of heavy music (i'd heard quite a bit metallica growing up, though mostly from load, tba and S&M though i couldn't actually remember any of the MoP songs(!), but by 13 i was already into mastodon and high on fire, to go with a lot of the post-hardcore/emo i was listening to) but, for me, it was something else altogether. i'm not sure how or if i could explain it but i did have a very strong reaction to it and it left a very great impression upon me! these days it isn't an album i revisit very often but there are very few i have time to these days (because there are lots of albums i want to revisit as well as new ones to listen to!) but when i do i never tire of it. i still actually recall the day i bought the album. it was a rather memorable day all round.
