We're never gonna 'get past' VR. It is the future. Well no one's ever said that before and been wrong! Nobodies ever had working, affordable VR hardware until the last few years.

There is no logical reason, other than techno-economic stall, that we wouldn't continue to move towards realism, as we have.

I'll gladly stay on my non-VR systems then while everyone else looks like this:

So, Rift comes out this month right? Is it worth it?

I'll gladly stay on my non-VR systems then while everyone else looks like this: Hardware evolves. The consumer hardware is already 2/3 the size of that devkit and significantly lighter. AR/VR devices will ultimately be just a pair of glasses. Also the experience of literally feeling like you're in another place is worth looking silly for. This isn't just a cool 3D screen in a box. When people try it, how it looks is the last of their concerns. So, Rift comes out this month right? Is it worth it? Yes because it is truly incredible. But being an early adopter is always risky. You might want to wait until there's enough software you're interested in to warrant the investment. Or just say fuck it like me and let the good times roll.

I have a problem with something a Bethesda employee said, suggesting that VR sets will replace normal monitors for everyday use in our homes, which I find ridiculous. Can you imagine having to strap that thing on your face every time you wanted to play a game or watch a film? Not to mention it would ruin any social aspects these activities offer.
I think some people are putting too much stock into this VR stuff.

Can you imagine having to strap that thing on your face every time you wanted to play a game or watch a film? If it's really good, yes. This is like going back decades ago and people laughing at the idea of even watching a TV for any great length of time much less playing video games. It's all ridiculous until it gets good.

Not really, people don't wear TV's on their faces.
As long as VR looks like that picture Logan posted, it'll never be anything more than a gimmick. Like 3D movies, and curved flat screens.

Can you imagine having to strap that thing on your face every time you wanted to play a game or watch a film? Not to mention it would ruin any social aspects these activities offer. I think some people are putting too much stock into this VR stuff. I mean it depends how far into the future we're talking. While it's still bulky VR isn't going to replace monitors or TV's, but by the time AR and VR fit into a pair of glasses at a high enough resolution, sure, why not. At that point you could just pin a TV of any size to any surface like those Hololens demo's. Not really, people don't wear TV's on their faces. As long as VR looks like that picture Logan posted, it'll never be anything more than a gimmick. Like 3D movies, and curved flat screens. VR is nothing like wearing a TV on your face in terms of what the experience looks and feels like. 3DTV isn't a gimmick because of the form factor, it's because nobody really cares. It doesn't offer any major advantage in most cases over 2DTV and is something largely pushed by the TV/theater business to make money. The very definition of a gimmick. VR is the opposite, it's a technology started as a grassroots movement by developers with a huge passion for the medium because they think it's incredible. Now I agree that until the price comes down and the devices get smaller and lighter it isn't going to gather mainstream traction; Oculus and Vive will remain a high end luxury for a few years until the mobile market catches up in quality and the technology becomes smaller. Even Oculus themselves have said the road to massive VR mainstream success is 10 years long, much like the smartphone, but it'll get there because the experience is too good to not have.

VR will have a place
That place is me locked in a room, buy yourself.
Outside of that scenario everything can go wrong... can you imagine if you were like playing Alien Isolation and your fucking cat jumped up on you???

Anyway, speaking of VR that is relevant to this thread; if Microsoft do release a more powerful Xbox One, I wouldn't be surprised if they announce Oculus support. They already have a partnership with Oculus for streaming and a deal in place for Oculus to use Xbox One controllers. Microsoft likely don't want to be left out of the VR game and this is probably their best option.

People are saying they cant do this because they will be alienating their customers and splitting the user-base etc... zzz... Same people probably have a different iPhone every year. If there is a market for something then MS is well with in their rights to provide a product. I've seen people moaning about they cant afford another xbox and it's not fair... but they are in the same place whether MS bring out a new one or not. SO I fail to see the issue. I cant have that so no one else can is stupid. The sooner something is brought to market the sooner it becomes affordable. MS just have to keep their promise that the software is back/forwards compatible and no everything is fine.,

Microsoft gotta do whatever they can to make up for their dumbass decisions, so I wouldn't be surprised.
Now they wanna crossplay on PC and PS4 after denying that to Sony last gen because they're so far behind in the dollars.

Crossplatforms ........ would this work if on backwards compatibility games if Sony also make this happen? Or is there no chance of backwards compatibility for PS3? The prospect of PS3, 360, PS4 and Xbox one players all able to play Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops 1 together is exciting to me. Could be like rewinding back 5 years for those games in terms of player numbers.

And there is no incentive, they have sold enough units to put their feet up. Cross play PC with Xbox in FPS will be a blood bath..
