On future releases, I'd really like to hear again the kind of acoustic guitar sound from the Black Album, especially the one from NEM; I've never heard anything like that -- before and since on any artist. I just want a ballad. When I think about it, the thing that's holding Hardwired and 72 Seasons back for me is the lack of any ballads. Those are essential parts of any Metallica album to me.

What a shame that the guy who wrote The Unforgiven, NEM, Mama Said, etc. hasn't released a proper ballad since 2008. And even then, I don't even know if I'd count TDTNC, only The Unforgiven III - Day never gets too quiet compared to Fade/Sanitarium/One.
I want Hetfield to write more delicate music again. But Lars only has two levels of dynamics nowadays.

Hopefully James has some solo tunes tucked away for a rainy day solo project down the road...

The Unforgiven III was such a perfect masterpiece of a ballad that maybe James doesn't have it in him anymore. He can't possibly top that.

It's mindboggling to think they (or more specifically Lars) wasn't entirely sold on it and it might've not made the album at all if James wasn't insistent on including it.

If UN3 had better production it would rank so much higher with me. It even has a proper solo

Death Magnetic as a whole with better production would probably be my favorite Metallica album.

I'm a burnout, forgive me, but did we ever get an acoustic version of U3 at All Within My Hands or something? If not, we deserve that. Probably sound alot like Creep by STP

Some of them are just too damn long and repetitive. At least in DM's case it's usually because they felt the need to jam yet another riff or idea in there just so they could justify the whole band writing credits for everything. On HTSD and 72S it's more like they had one too few ideas for the songs and decided to just repeat the ones they had a few times too many to get the length "right" for a Metallica track.

To me, the DM way of cramming ALL the fucking riffs in the WHOLE WORLD onto one album was the far worse crime. Artificially lengthening the songs is pretty bad too, but not nearly as bad IMO.

Nothing really sounds over bloated to me on DM. Side by side to most of the classics they mimic, the arrangements are almost identical. If I'm listening to say Judas Kiss, it never feels like Oh WOW, why did they take it there. S&R takes you on journey and never trips up etc.
On Hardwired, you have whole songs that just feel like a shity riff sandwich thrown at the wall, Murder One, confusion, Am I savage all have a bit of potential, but are pretty filler quality.

Ah yes, of course. That awkward version. No guitar James is always funny to me. He literally does not know how to be on stage without one. Bless.

Assuming the first half of 2025 is M72, I'd love to see 2026 be 2006 pt. 2 with an MOP anniversary celebration and some new songs live.

Imagine sending this post back in time to little headbanging us. Back in '91 I don't think I'd ever imagine that I'd be still be arguing with people about Lars's eyebrows or whatever. 2026! 😂 WTF?

I’ve never understood this, I’m thinking the songs through in my mind and there aren’t that many riffs in any of them. Intro - verse, sometimes a pre chorus, chorus then the occasional bridge riff/extra part thingy. Like already mentioned, they basically copied the formula from the first albums. That said the are several places where stuff could be cut, played less times etc. and I’ve never understood why a third verse is necessary if its just repeated lyrics. Some of the soungs are way too bloated as well. What I miss most about newer Metallica songs are different structures. It’s the same shit in almost every song.

Maybe I posted this once before, and it may suit moreso now, but I imagined this concert format where Metallica bring 4 other bands into a 5 set night. Each of the first 4 sets is a band with a Metallica member, last set is a short Metallica (say 10 songs blitzer) set. Would require a more organised rehearsal period and approach of course.
Get Rob playing a set with Rodrigo Y Gabriella. A set of James and AIC, yes please. Maybe Lars with part of Diamond Head. Kirk, pull together some of the Portals players and play it.
I'd pay a lot for a night like that.

Yeah, no more MOP anniversary shows please.
