The weird thing about the Metallica album cycle is it's the only times the fans pretty much know exactly what the band's plans are for years in advance. With M72 wrapping up in Mexico this fall, what's next? I'm still expecting M72 to stick around in 2025 and for them to hit South America, Asia, and Australia in some form. I'm not sure if all of those markets are going to get the M72 two night treatment, but I'd like to see them get more mileage out of it if they switch up the sets a bit more.
After that, I'm imagining a Sphere residency in Vegas. I bet Metallica has already been working on a sphere show in some capacity for years now, and I think it's only a matter of time.
If not that, they could also experiment with a touring festival. Orion was way too much for them, and they bit off way more than they could chew. But if they met in the middle between M72 and Orion they could have a cool, traveling event. One main stage, maaaybe one side stage if it logistically makes sense, music from 4pm to 11pm all weekend long, splitting the headline spot with another huge band like GNR.

Like Summer Sanitarium 😉 Wish they would bring that back.

I reckon 2025 will see South America, Australia/Asia as a tour schedule. Two nights in stadiums to make it viable, financially. Then after that... who knows? I think the sphere thing is too gimmicky (yes, even for a band who currently revels in merchandise gimmickry).
I genuinely struggle to think of what happens then. The glacial way they write albums means that IF they started, let's say, back end of 2025 we wouldn't see anything until summer 2026 at least and then what? They crank up the stadium tour thing again.
For perspective, in August 2026 the band will be:
Lars 63 James 63 Kirk 64 Rob 61
They've already gone to a 15-song set with instrumentals and video intros etc. Partially that's due to the big stage as well, drums need to rise and fall, band need to get to the next quarter, vocal and physical breaks etc. It's hard to see them doing this again. Which is partially why I found it so emotional at Munich, I think that was the last time.
But if you're asking me my dream scenario?
I'd like them to do a residency in an arena in a bunch of countries/locations in a country and play each album, front to back. Something for the fans. Interestingly, on the latest Metallica report podcast, James said he wants to play ALL their songs live before they retire. He alluded to the ones that only got a single airing need another one cos they weren't that great.
As far as new music goes... I think I'd be ok with them not doing another album. Just do songs; drop an EP of 4-6 songs. Do a covers album. Or a livestream thing where they take requests from fans. I think the legacy is set and they have nothing to prove and as time is not on their side, don't spend 18 months writing an album, spend 3 doing and EP.
We also have the boxsets to look forward to sol maybe expand that, dig into the live catalogue and release that on physical media. I'd fucking LOVE a Live Shit vinyl box. Or remix and release the acoustic shows from over the years in a box.

They should put Metallica on hiatus and do some solo projects. Something interesting might come out of that.

He alluded to the ones that only got a single airing need another one cos they weren't that great I didn't know this, that's incredible news. It sounds like he's alluding to Fixxxer's performance vocally? I appreciate that the guys have an appreciation for all of their songs. Even Lars using Prince Charming as an April Fools prank one year was cool to see they acknowledge their rarest tunes.
I could also see them doing some sort of residency playing all of the albums, but they'd have to market it in a very smart way to not get people to just roast the concept of the ReLoad and St. Anger shows. They'd definitely have to play 3+ nights of the first 5 albums based on how fast those would sell.
My all time dream for the band is also to do something like that, but first I'd love for them to get off of M72 and head right back into the studio with a real producer known for challenging musicians. They've done two Fidelman albums now. With 72 Seasons not going #1, and all of these older legacy bands having strong comeback albums with Andrew Watt (Ozzy, Stones, Pearl Jam sorta), they have to be thinking outside of the "Metallica bubble" at least a little bit now.

I think Fixxxer is the one, yeah. He really struggled with the vocals on that... well the livestream version of course. LiveMet sounds perfect Yeah, a new producer would be good, but I think I've come to the realisation that the last time they were produced, in the true sense of the word, was the Load/Reload sessions. Ever since then it's basically been 'record this, mix it' as far as Fidelman is concerned. And he lets them get away with things which he should (snare samples, stupid fucking volume on the hi hat). I think they no longer care about sales or chart position so there's no real motivation to change. Plus, they like habit, they like routine. But who knows? Maybe they will go with a new producer, maybe they will crank out an album in a year. I hope for all these things.... but I'm realistic. This autumn/winter will be the Load box, next year will be the sporadic M72 gigs for the rest of the world and then who the fuck knows. Whatever happens, we'll be here chatting shit from the cheap seats.

Been hoping for years that they would hook up with Steven Wilson to record. He's always busy enough that they just couldnt take 2 years to fuck about. And would love to hear SW's take on what Metallica could sound like on vinyl/CD

We've just got the same old, same old from metallica (recycled riffs/lyrics/ideas) these days. Although Kirk's Portals wasn't great, i think he has the right idea. The members with some different musicians could create something better.

I hope they don't do any sort of residency. That's what performers on their way out do. It would be cool if they actually wrote some sort of album during 2025 but I see that as the Load/Reload box set year.

And if that’s what he needs to do to be happy, so be it. But they’re touring at the same rate as the Stones now, and Kirk complained about it again in an interview recently. Residency feels like one of the only ways I see them playing rarer songs again.

I think the South America, Asia, Oceania tours will be spread across two years, with a handful of US and/or European festivals also both years. Sporadic couple of week-long tours with months in between. The Load/Reload box sets will be out throughout that time, and I reckon they'll do some sort of once off little gig or two to play some Load/Reload songs, like at a Fillmore and/or Helping Hands event or something. We're looking at mid-end of '26 by the time all that's wrapped up.
They will play only a few gigs a year beyond that if anything. Maybe we'll get some fresh studio covers in that time or an acoustic covers show which will be recorded and packaged up with other live covers of recent years, this will coincide or be used to promote the Garage Inc remaster/boxset (if we get one) around '27 early '28.
We will see ramp up in brand endorsements and partnerships as the touring slows, Kirk will do another solo EP, Rob will do some shows / a tour with other bands.

Some would argue it was earlier, but in my mind we've entered the "old" Metallica era with 72 Seasons. I have no expectations anymore and I'm just glad they're still playing. It's disappointing they never managed to ramp up their album output, but it is what it is.

If you are asking my blue sky thinking for the idea.... They do 3 weeks in 20 cities across the world. Arenas only, in the round (I'd personally bring back the Load stage, but TBA stage would be cool too). Then they can play a show every other day, an album a night. So, they can base themselves in a country for a month, go home for a month, next country for a month and so on. LA, SF, NYC, London, Tokyo, Melbourne, Berlin, Paris, Copenhagen, Madrid etc etc We're looking at mid-end of '26 by the time all that's wrapped up. I sort of agree but I think it might be diminishing returns on albums. I love they did 72S. Is it a classic? Probably not. But they still had the desire. To be honest, they could have done this M72 tour without a new album. They're at that stage now. I can't imagine 72S brought in legions of new, younger fans. It would be great to have new music, but I'd love them to set the limit for an EP and just make those 4 songs the best they can be. No need to cram a billion minutes of music onto a CD. Take a step back, limit yourself and release an EP every six months.

Yes please. EP’s and more cover songs. I would be fine with that. And honestly I kinda dig a lot of their covers more than their own recent material.

If it’s not with a new producer, a covers album with Greg would be great. Let them focus on that and learning the back catalog, if the alternative is Hardwired Part 3.

An in studio recording of all the various acoustic covers, including their own tunes they've acoustified, would be so satisfying.

I imagine good quality rehearsal audio of all of their newer covers exist from HQ. With a good mix, I'm sure a lot of it is usable as is based on how good some of the live performances were, like the new AWMH 2022 covers.
I wonder if a new cover album, and an acoustic record to promote a quieter acoustic tour, could be the same thing.

This is the sort of stuff I was hoping would show up in the Vinyl Club I think if it had continued then it would have had stuff like that on there. The VC was a great idea badly executed. Like anything the band does when it comes to buying from them direct, RoW gets fucked with shipping. They should have had VC release pressed in the EU for EU/RoW to keep the costs down.

The St Anger Live vinyl still gets regular spins at home....is a good one for sure.

On future releases, I'd really like to hear again the kind of acoustic guitar sound from the Black Album, especially the one from NEM; I've never heard anything like that -- before and since on any artist.

2026 could be a MOP anniversary tour. They've played all the songs as recently as 2019, and they seem to celebrate MOP more than any other album than The Black Album. I remember they honored the 35th anniversary on TV in 2021.
