Wow getting added here took a month! That's nuts but thanks admins.
So I'm gonna tell you guys my story about a former Met Message Board member who went by the name, ToeKnee. So in 2003 when I was recovering from the death of my first LACC (Los Angeles City College) friend Greg Zera at my big sisters house and I found this message board on her computer. It was a really friendly place then.
So I found a post that said something like "Rate my Met Cover of Crerping Death!" So I checked it out. The sound quality did sound like a home recording but he played it note for note perfect! So I told him, "Good job dude!!!" He was really grateful. Then he told me he lived in England! I said "No way dude! That's where 90% of my favorite bands are from and I've never talked to anybody there!" We were best friends from then on.
So it turns out that Toe Knee had this one autobiography Metallica book memorized that I can't find now. It was like a $45 book and had all the notes from Flemming Rasmusen of all their amps and amp settings. I'm sorry I can't link that here now, he knew the exact title of it, I didn't. What this meant though, is Toe Knee knew everything there is to know about Metal Guitar Tone, so I gave him the nickname "Toe Knee The Tone Lord". I called him "Toe Knee The Tone Man" before that, but that didn't really present it with enough authority. (By the way if you're a typically impatient person who think more than 2 characters makes you say "TLDR" or Too Long Didn't Read, you're a total dick and kindly GTFO, this is going to be a very long post)
So along with knowing every single amp setting of the band on every song, Toe Knee gave me lots of great gear buying advice because he always knew the best way to get the best results from the least money. Every guitar related thing I own came from his recommendations that I'm just gonna leak here for all of you as a gift if you got this far into this post.
Toe Knee's recomendations:
I. The Agile AL 3000 guitar. It's a Gibson Black Beauty guitar, but made in Korea so it's like 3 times cheaper and sounds and plays just as good and is made of all the same wood and design as the Black Beauty!
II. The Jet City/Soldano Trick! In case you guys didn't know, Micheal Soldano decided to do the world a big favor and manufacture a Chinese made Soldano combo amp called the Jet City 5012C. However that's just the beginning. He also taught himself to solder and hand build guitars, amps, and pedals, so he was kind enough to send over the official Soldano Super Lead Overdrive schematic, which I then gave to custom Hollywood amp builder Jens Kruse and told him "Turn it into this!" So he did. So now I have a Soldano Super Lead Overdrive 50 watt combo amp, but that's not even the whole story!!!
III. Glenn Fricker says "The sound is in the speaker!", and it just so happens that Toe Knee told me that the official speaker of all the Soldano speaker cabinets is the Eminence Legend V1216, so I ha Jens put one of those in there in place of the 'Shit-field' it came with.
IV. So Toe Knee put his self learned electronics knowledge to good use by building a custom pedal I requested, the Girth Control Pedal! What is it? It's a combination Ibanez Tube Screamer with an amp footswitch all in one pedal!!!! No one but Toe Knee thought of or made this pedal! It was the flagship pedal of his company, Aurora Audio UK.
V.The EQ! So also Toe knee made me a custom eq pedal called The Focal Point, that was based on the Mesa Boogie 5 band eq, except Toe Knee said Mesa had made mistakes buiding their eq's and his pedal fixed those mistakes, so his was actually better than their's!!!
VI. The software! So for a few years Toe Knee and I worked off of a cracked version of Adobe Audition, which does a lot, but that expired, so then he told me to learn to use Reaper, so I learned that and we made an album with it, and because we were best friends, he re amped and produced that album totally for free!!! This is the best gift he gave me and it took us 5 years to make that album. It is here:
mattyo.bandcamp.com/album/the-ghosts-of-the-insane
(This is here more that you all can see what a good producer he was, I know none of the music on this album is as good as a Mrtallica album but we will always be proud of it.)
So now that we've covered all that we're getting close to the sad part of this story. So, I'm not sure when, maybe in 2010 Toe Knee was diagnosed with diabetes. For the most part he managed his condition and had a great fruitful life, until December 26'th 2023, which was the last day I got to talk to him, :(......... We don't know exactly what took him out, it was either an od of his diabetes medicine or it was the fact that he was drinking and alcahol turns into sugar when it's digested, but either way, that was his last day alive. He was only 38!!! That's way too young to Effing die man!!! :(.....
He also made a lot of his own music, but he was a very shy private person so he never released his music wide like I did with mine. You can hear some of it and some collaborating he and I did on this soundcloud:
on.soundcloud.com/RsTXe
We did a version of Megadeth's In My Darkest Hour and you'll also hear the great tones of his amps he built.
So Toe Knee and I were best friends, from here, for 20 years!!! It really hurts that he's gone!!! :(.....
He even would've advised me against putting this post here though, since he left here years ago because of trolls, so I don't expect a lot of good to come from this post, but it's where he came from and some people here from back then might still be here that'll remember him, so bring on the trolls, if you like getting yelled at go ahead and say something mean, we are not afraid of You.
Toe Knee's amp company still lives on thanks to his business partner in Canada. If you like high quality hand made gear, search for Aurora Audio UK and you'll see their site. Damn, I tried to get you guys a link to his site but it doesn't exist anymore!!! :(.....
I know his business partner is still taking orders, but I don't know what site he moved those to. I apologize.
So Toe Knee did a lot more than this but I have to respect his right to the privacy he loved and leave those details out.
R.I.P. Toe Knee The Tone Lord, the best music friend I ever made, made right here on the Met board!!! 9/2/85 to 12/26/23
:(.............
