You people up there missed out on some great stuff over the decades. I cant imagine mainstream radio having much to offer overseas just like here but at least we get Aussie music thrown in with the Pearl Jam, Green Day and Soundgarden churning machine.
Aussie classics get tiring too but lots of gems that I take for granted.
Thread is for these gems, hidden classics and a look into the music scene down here from way back to current day.
Encouraging others to contribute.

Cold Chisel. YOU GOT NOTHING I WANT. Typical 70s Aussie fuck you. Band of icons. Don Walker on piano writes amazing songs worthy of replacing our National Anthem. Ian Moss, bluesy rock guitar legend and Jimmy Barnes, here before he started screaming too much. Great musicians, part of the soundtrack here, lots of great songs

Mark of Cain. BARKHAMMER.
Tough motherfucking band from my home town. I've plugged these guys before. Frontman John used to work at same place I used to so managed to get some CDs signed years ago. Theyve worked thru a heap of drummers, joining up with the legendary John Stanier for a good while. Still active and their shows always sellout. Definitely worth looking into.

Midnight Oil, I love Blue Sky Mining, great album. Midnight Oil. Another band that is part of our identity almost, like Chisel. Blue Sky was a huge album as was the one before it. I prefer earlier Midnight Oil, a little more raw.

Insert any Grinspoon here.... imo the greatest Aussie band since INXS. Phil is easily the best frontman since Hutchance

The Mess Hall LOCK AND LOAD.
2-piece rock band. I saw them live only once and they won me over within only a couple of songs, lot of energy coming out of only 2 dudes, was awesome. I remember the singer was wearing a Ford Motor Co t-shirt that night too haha. Great 2000's band.

Radio Birdman NEW RACE
Our version of the MC5s, Radio Birdman was a rock punk band of the 70's,contributing and influencing the punk scene here for a few short years (reforming again in the 90's, off/on ever since) They only put out 2 albums in their 70's heyday before breaking up. This is from their debut

Grinspoon PEDESTRIAN
Heavy rock band formed mid-90s, I never got to see them live in their early days - big regret. Their first 2 albums for me are the peak of their career. Things got a little nicer after that, pushing for a bit of radio play, which they ultimately achieved. Under-rated riff machine guitarist Pat. Phil, as Spartan mentioned above, is a born frontman, however he let drugs take him down and fucking up the band in the process. I wish I didnt know about his behaviour during this period, particularly fucking over his bandmates, so better just to focus on the music. Glad I finally caught them live during reunion tour, the band have got great energy on stage. And Phil has been a positive part of other projects I have seen too, so hopefully the bad shit is left behind forever.

Rose Tattoo ROCK N ROLL IS KING.
Formed in the mid 70s and lasting a decade, Rose Tattoo were a massive part of the pub rock scene in Australia. Iconic Aussie frontman Angry Anderson, a tough little baldy with attitude to match the other members, all covered in tatts, back when most people were not tatted up. Solid rock leaning on a lot of slide guitar the Tatts influenced many bands including Guns n Roses who would cover their song Nice Boys. They reformed to support GnR on tour and have continued on, still belting out their music at festivals.

Saw them "opening" for Maiden in 2008, good stuff. Nice mate, what city? It was a festival in Lisbon, Slayer was also on the bill. But they did that thing where the headliner plays at prime time instead of last, so when Rose Tattoo and Tara Perdida (Portuguese punk band) hit the stage it was late and almost everyone left...

The Toss SOFTCOCK
I was at the local footy / cricket club one night for some game I cant remember and there was some people I knew at one end of the oval with a fire going and plenty of ice for beers so wandered over. They also had some great music playing so asked them what we were listening to... one band was King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard (I will post them up later) but the band that I walked into was much more simple and garagey. Whos this? The Toss. Right. Turns out they are local southern blokes having fun. Self described as Surf/Sport/Rock/Paper/Scissors.

The Cruel Sea BLACK STICK
The Cruel Sea started out as an instrumental surf type band near the end of the 80s. Things took off for them when they brought in Tex Perkins, another national singing icon of ours, a deep rich voice that has fronted many different bands over the years including Beasts of Bourbon, The Ape and a very successful money spinner doing his Johnny Cash tribute. The band is still around playing but it was the 90s they dominated. (Side note : Tex's solo album with the Dark Horses opens with our wedding song 😀) This was the song that started getting peoples attention...

Nice thread! A couple of years ago I set out to look into Australian indie pop/rock from the 80's-90's, 'cause yeah, if you live far away you miss out on all that if you don't look for it. As expected I found quite a lot of great stuff, so it was a fun project! I'm sure there's more to discover as well. Here are the 39 acts included in my playlist of favorite songs so far:
The Church The Clean Crowded House DD Smash Died pretty DM3 The Eastern Dark Even as we speak Exploding white mice Garageland Glide The Go-Betweens Grinspoon Hex Hoodoo Gurus The Hummingbirds Hunters & Collectors The Lighthouse Keepers Little murders The Living deads Mental as anything The Moffs Powderfinger Radio Birdman Ratcat The Riptides Scientists Screaming Tribesmen Shy Impostors Smudge The Someloves The Stems The Triffids Ups and downs The Visitors The Whitlams Widdershins X You Am I
I had only heard (of) 7 of these acts before the project.

I don't consider myself a close-minded person musically but it's funny how that resistance kicked in

Do you know of most of these bands ford71V8? It's hard to really get a sense of how well-known a certain band is locally when you're from another country.

Hey man, sorry I somehow missed your post with the list. Nice selections you worked through, Im not familiar with about a third of that list so will check those out. Many of them are on the list to put in here. EXPLODING WHITE MICE are awesome and YOU AM I are one of my favourite Aussie bands, seen them so many times as well as most of Tim Rogers side and solo projects.

Daddy Cool HO HONEY HI
Daddy Cool were a 70s Aussie rock band, mainly known for their first song "Eagle Rock", reaching iconic status here and which is still overplayed today. But they were a great early rock band and released plenty of good songs. This one I recall throughout my childhood and the clip reminds me when I was really young going to watch my dad play in bands, often outdoor gigs set up like this. Even dads old fav beer is on the drummers tshirt, Southwark Bitter. Good snapshot of early Australia, simple times, good music.
